Summary:
The purpose of the License Vocational Nursing Program at High Desert Medical College is to offer a Nursing Program built on benchmarks of quality educational standards, which fosters performance-based learning, a holistic approach to nursing and graduates who are successful in their practice of nursing. The program is designed to exemplify academic excellence, full academic and personal support and resources for students, a cadre of qualified and experienced faculty and collaborative partnerships with clinical facilities.
This position is responsible for providing leadership and management in the development, delivery, and operation of the License Vocational Nursing program. Primary responsibilities include the regular exercise of discretion and independent judgment with respect to supervision of faculty and other institutional personnel, program management, and program staffing. The DON works to develop partnerships with healthcare organizations, physicians, and medical facilities as well as other educational institutions to establish professional community relationships and advance the program.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Administer the LVN education program to ensure conformity to Nursing Program plan design and to standards required to maintain licensing and endorsement of accrediting bodies, Board of License Vocational Nursing, and the California Board for Private Post-Secondary Education and any other accreditation agencies deemed necessary to Legacy Education, DBA High Desert Medical College.
- Facilitate the Nursing program NCLEX review process, working directly with college administrators, faculty, and staff to ensure student compliance and success with the NCLEX review program, assessments that lead to successful student outcomes on the License Vocational Nursing NCLEX exam.
- Ensure that the Nursing Program maintains and meets the standards set by the Board of License Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians as it relative to NCLEX board examination pass rates on a quarterly and annual year over year basis. The Nursing program must maintain NCLEX Nursing Program pass rates of 80% or better on an ongoing basis.
- Direct and coordinate activities related to review and development of academic policies, curriculum, resources, facilities, services, and program evaluation.
- Assist with the marketing, evaluation, and acceptance of individuals into the nursing program.
- Manage the satisfactory progress of nursing students and provide positive interventions when necessary.
- Prepares and administers the budget.
- Assist campus management with supervision and mentoring of Nursing faculty.
- Direct faculty and staff recruitment, retention, and performance monitoring.
- Take all steps reasonable and necessary to maintain an adequate number of qualified faculty to develop and implement the program to achieve the program mission and goals.
- Supervise those responsible for coordinating clinical rotations with various healthcare facilities throughout the community and perform oversight of students and faculty prior to placement as well as execute evaluations and paperwork with students and faculty upon completion.
- Supervise and meet with Nursing faculty and those responsible for clinical rotation placement to ensure students are knowledgeable about and meeting requirements such as syllabus competencies; required grades; program requirements; and site requirements.
- Supervise those who monitor clinical rotations and provide follow up as necessary.
- Evaluate faculty and staff to promote and maintain strong Nursing Program student service and advocacy commitment as demonstrated by a positive attitude, accessibility and approachability, adaptability, strong problem-solving skills and expression of desire to support students.
- Coordinate with campus management relative to development and monitoring of Faculty Development Plans for nursing faculty.
- Supervise and direct Nursing program faculty in developing and maintaining course outlines, syllabi, lesson plans, assignments, test and other course materials as well as the simulated clinical laboratory.
- Oversee and timely submit assessment tools required by campus management for the Nursing program.
- Direct, assist and coordinate the participation of nursing faculty in curriculum and/or textbook reviews, revisions and development and oversee their committee work.
- Maintain and facilitate regular interaction with campus management to ensure institutional continuity and adherence to accreditation standards within the Nursing program.
- Oversee quality classroom, lab, equipment, supplies, inventory, and maintenance
- Timely prepare and submit requested reports and documentation.
- Work with external constituencies such as the Advisory Council, key administrators at health care facilities, and other appropriate bodies to develop and maintain strong linkages between High Desert Medical College the nursing program and the community.
- Attend all meetings that pertain to the advancement of Legacy Education and the nursing program.
- Ensure that the nursing program is using state-of-the art nursing education practices.
