Director of Public Health Nursing

The Crawford County Health Department is seeking a full-time (36 hours/week) Director of Public Health Nursing responsible for supervising and coordinating activities of nursing programs and nursing personnel to provide comprehensive public health nursing services that promote the health and well-being of Crawford County residents.

Professional experience with children, immunization administration, phlebotomy, and WIC Program preferred.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES include the following and are to be performed only after appropriate training. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Understands and supports the Health Department’s mission of preventing disease and promoting wellness.
  • Serves as liaison between staff and administrative personnel.
  • Represent the Health Department at community meetings.
  • Develops, implements, interprets, reviews, and revises policies and procedures for providing and evaluating nursing services.
  • Provides orientation, teaching, and guidance to staff to improve quality and quantity of service.
  • Presents relevant program updates at staff meetings.
  • Evaluates performance of personnel and interprets nursing standards to staff, advisory boards, nursing committees, and community groups.
  • Schedules duty assignment of nursing personnel and coordinates services with other health and social agencies.
  • Reviews, evaluates, and interprets nursing records, vital statistics, and other data affecting health service in order to assess community needs and to plan and implement programs to meet these needs.
  • Participates in Illinois Project for Local Assessment of Needs (IPLAN) meetings.
  • Assists in planning educational programs for nurses, related professional workers, and community groups to meet needs of personnel and practitioners.
  • Assists in preparation of agency grant applications.
  • Assures all Health Department staff members receive Safety Training/Bloodborne Pathogen Training and TB education and skin testing within one month of being hired and annually thereafter.
  • Assure OSHA requirements are met.
  • Oversee and participate in all nursing programs including but not limited to WIC, Better Birth Outcomes, communicable disease, lead, immunizations, and laboratory services.
  • Attends relevant Regional program meetings, participates in and responds to Regional program reviews.
  • Submits Regional program reports to appropriate Regional staff and local Public Health Administrator.
  • Participate in Emergency Planning and Preparedness activities.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Directly supervises all employees in the Nursing Department. Carries out supervisory responsibility in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include assisting with interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints, and resolving problems.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The Nursing Supervisor must have good physical and mental health; ability to maintain confidentiality and remain nonjudgmental; ability to apply basic principles and practices underlying professional nursing techniques and public health nursing; ability to apply laws and regulations pertinent to public health; ability to assess community nursing needs and to formulate plans to meet those needs; ability to carry out detailed nursing instructions of a technical nature related to client care; ability to establish and further satisfactory working relationships with clients, family members, doctors, the general public, doctors, State and Regional staff, and other professional health personnel and agencies; willingness to attend out of town meetings that may require overnight stays; ability to maintain professional conduct; ability to work effectively and cooperatively within work group; ability to maintain focus and composure in distraction situations; patience in dealing with infants, children, and low-functioning adults; reliable transportation.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

A) Certification of graduation from school of nursing approved by Department of Professional Regulation; and

B) An Illinois license as a Registered Nurse by examination; or an Illinois license by endorsement within six months of the initial date of employment; and

C) A Bachelor’s degree in nursing (preferred) from a college program which includes practicum experience in public health nursing and advanced preparation in administration and supervision; or

D) An Associate’s degree in Nursing and two years’ related experience and/or training.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

The Nursing Supervisor must possess and provide a current Illinois Registered Nurse license and must maintain current CPR certification. Must maintain a valid driver’s license and automobile insurance.

PHYSICALREQUIREMENTS

· Frequently operate computer and other medical office equipment

· Operate medical examination equipment

· Potential exposure to infectious disease present at all times

· Ability to occasionally lift up to 30 lbs

· Occasionally standing for long periods of time

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $30.00 per hour
