Steiner eOptics, Inc., a local division of a multi-billion-dollar international manufacturer, is seeking a qualified Director of Research and Development.
The Director of R&D is responsible for multiple facets of engineering at the company’s Miamisburg, Ohio site, with primary responsibility in leading a multi-disciplinary engineering team focused on the creation of cutting edge electro-optical products that serve the needs of warfighters worldwide. The company’s product line includes aiming lasers, night vision goggles, illumination tools, advanced fire-control-systems, and similar offerings for the dismounted soldier.
The successful candidate will create a successful culture of innovative design, with focus areas including Design, Analysis, Process, Product, Testing, and Configuration Engineering. This person will contribute to, and then execute, the company’s product development road map. As part of a small team, the Director of R&D is expected to be a working Engineer. A portion of their time will be spent on electrical/mechanical design and troubleshooting.
This position reports directly to the SVP, Defense Business Unit.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Work alongside New Product Development to execute the product roadmap on a timely basis

Design and develop electrical / mechanical / optical components, equipment, systems, sub-systems, and products applying knowledge and appropriate design and engineering principles

Utilize SolidWorks 3D CAD software to design and develop components

Confirm system and product capabilities by designing feasibility and testing methods

Develop design, performance, testing, and process/assembly specifications

Successfully transition products from conceptual design to full-rate production with a focus on manufacturability

Ensure compliance with ISO 9001 and other quality requirements

Manage department budget and related expenses

Ensure schedules are understood and workload is managed to meet objectives

Develop training resources for direct reports

Mentor direct reports for career enrichment
Requirements:
REQUIRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE:
-
Bachelor’s in Engineering degree (preference is Mechanical or Electrical. Optics or Physics will also be considered if the background experience is a fit)

10+ years of relevant mechanical/electrical/optical design work experience

Minimum 3 years of experience managing an engineering department in an ISO environment, including budget and personal development

Possess a good understanding of engineering principles

Proficient in Excel and other Microsoft products

Strong written and verbal communication skills

Must have very good time management, organization, and multi-tasking skills

Excellent problem-solving skills

PREFERRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE:
-
Background / specialization Electro-Optical or Electro-Mechanical

Experience in visual optics, LEDs, OLEDs, lasers, camera sensors, and associated drivers and electronics; designing for low power consumption, tight packaging requirements, and systems integration of software and hardware

Proficient in SolidWorks / PDMWorks

Working knowledge of ERP systems
