Position Summary

Providence High School (PHS) seeks a Director of Safety & Security to lead and continuously strengthen a comprehensive, proactive, and human-centered approach to campus safety. This is a newly elevated leadership role designed to ensure that Providence remains a place where students, faculty, staff, and families feel safe, supported, and able to thrive.

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer and working closely with the Head of School and the leadership team, the Director of Safety & Security will oversee physical security, emergency preparedness, incident response, and community education, bringing both professional expertise and a calm, compassionate presence to daily life on campus.

Schedule Expectations

Monday through Friday 8am to 4pm

Salary Range

$65,000.00 – $106,500.00 Annual USD

  • Final compensation within this range will be determined based on the candidate’s years of relevant experience, education, internal equity considerations and organizational needs. Please note that compensation will be prorated based on the employee’s date of hire and Department of Labor (DOL) classification, including but not limited to full-time, part-time, exempt, or non-exempt status. All compensation is subject to applicable deductions and withholdings in accordance with federal, state, and local laws. The Role

The Director of Safety & Security is responsible for the design, implementation, and leadership of a comprehensive school safety program that addresses physical, operational, digital, and emotional well-being. The role blends strategic planning with day-to-day presence and readiness, ensuring both preparedness and reassurance across the community.

This leader will be highly visible on campus, deeply collaborative with faculty and staff, and confident working with students, families, first responders, and external partners. Safety at Providence is not only about systems and protocols; it is about relationships, preparation, visibility, and leadership in moments that matter most.

Essential Duties & Key Responsibilities

Strategic Safety Leadership & Emergency Preparedness

  • Lead ongoing review and enhancement of the school’s Comprehensive School Safety Plan (CSSP), ensuring compliance with ICS and NIMS standards
  • Develop and maintain functional emergency annexes (lockdown, fire, earthquake, severe weather, public health events, etc.)
  • Design and oversee a Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) to ensure instructional and operational continuity during disruptions
  • Plan, conduct, and assess emergency drills and tabletop exercises across the school community
  • Lead threat assessment processes in partnership with school counselors and administrators

Campus Security & Daily Operations

  • Oversee contracted security personnel, ensuring professionalism, alignment with school culture, and consistent standards
  • Manage campus access control, surveillance systems, ID systems, and key management
  • Partner with facilities and operations teams to enhance physical security and campus safety infrastructure
  • Lead traffic, arrival, and dismissal safety planning

Incident Response & Crisis Management

  • Serve as a primary on-site leader during emergencies and critical incidents
  • Coordinate response efforts with school leadership, wellness staff, and external first responders
  • Ensure accurate documentation, follow-up, and communication after incidents
  • Support post-incident recovery with care and transparency

Training, Education & Community Engagement

  • Provide ongoing safety training for faculty, staff, and students
  • Lead parent and caregiver education sessions related to safety protocols and emergency response
  • Develop and manage student-parent reunification plans, including off-site contingencies
  • Maintain strong working relationships with local law enforcement, fire, and emergency agencies

Cybersecurity & Risk Awareness

  • Collaborate with IT staff and consultants to support cybersecurity readiness and data protection
  • Assist in developing protocols that safeguard sensitive student, family, and employee information

Presence, Trust & Culture

  • Maintain a visible, approachable presence on campus
  • Build trust with students, families, faculty, and staff through calm leadership and clear communication
  • Model professionalism, discretion, and compassion at all times

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Emergency Management, Cybersecurity, or a related field—or equivalent professional experience
  • At least5–10 years of senior safety or security leadership experience, preferably in a school, campus, or complex institutional setting
  • Demonstrated expertise in emergency preparedness, incident response, and security operations
  • Familiarity with CSSP compliance, COOP planning, and ICS/NIMS frameworks
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)
  • Valid California driver’s license and ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as needed

Preferred

  • Experience working in a school or youth-centered environment
  • Background in law enforcement, military, or emergency services
  • EMT training or experience
  • Bilingual (Spanish preferred)
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed and student-centered threat assessment practices

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to walk a large campus regularly and respond quickly in emergencies
  • Ability to lift 50+ pounds and work indoors and outdoors
  • Comfort with varied schedules during events or emergency situations
