Position: Director of Surgical Services

Responsibilities:
- The Director plans, organizes, and directs operational and administrative activities for the Operating Room and peri-operative departments.
- Develops and implements policies, procedures, and processes for nursing personnel that are consistent with evidence-based practice and regulatory compliance standards.
- Serves as the Surgical Services leadership representative on hospital committees.
- Sets priorities, develops goals/objectives, develops plans, implements strategies, directs the flow of work within assigned departments, and delegates jobs to appropriate levels of staff.
- Effectively plans and organizes work and duties of self and others to achieve specific results.
- Establishes and implements policies and procedures for functional operation of the assigned departments.
- Directs the preparation and maintenance of department reports.
- Follows established standards of practice in providing care for surgical patients, and supporting the needs of their families.
- Demonstrates the ability to take initiative and responsibility; communicates goals and objectives; recognizes contributions; and provides an example for others to follow.
- In conjunction with other Nursing leaders and the Chief Nursing Officer, defines the hospital philosophy of nursing and assures it is integrated into the delivery of perioperative care on a daily basis by assuring all staff are informed and committed to that concept.
- Ensures the efficient, economic and quality performance of assigned departments/areas of responsibility to support or provide quality health care delivery.
- Delegates functions appropriately encouraging staff to take ownership of those responsibilities.
- Demonstrates the ability to establish performance expectations; monitor performance; provide feedback; take corrective action; provide coaching/training; and resolve departmental conflicts.
- Selects, orients and assigns department staff (either directly or through designee).
- Motivates and inspires employees to accomplish goals and objectives of department and hospital.
- Demonstrates the ability to coordinate work across departmental lines; shares resources; and works with peers to reduce conflict, duplication/waste, and build a climate of trust.
- Collaboratively works with peers and others to set and achieve interdepartmental/organizational goals and resolve barriers to interdepartmental/organizational performance.
- Recommends changes in administrative policies to carry out hospital objectives more effectively.
- Interprets, supports, and implements organizational decisions, policies, and procedures to staff.
Qualifications
- BSN required. MSN preferred.
- Current and unrestricted TX registered nurse license required.
- Three to five years nursing leadership experience required
- At least 5 years of OR experience required
- Member of professional organizations such as AORN preferred.
Other Responsibilities
- Completes required orientation as directed by facility
- Follows facility and OSHA safety rules and procedures while on assignment
- Respects cultural and religious practices of patients
- Upholds HIPAA regulations
Working Conditions
Because patients need round-the-clock care, working hours include days, nights, weekends and holidays. The number of patients assigned per shift will vary and the environment is fast-paced. This position will require spending considerable time walking, bending, stretching and standing; assisting in patient transfers; may include hazards from exposure to chemicals and bodily fluids.
Physical Demands
- Ability to lift twenty (20) pounds. Moving, lifting or transferring of patients may involve lifting of greater than fifty pounds.
