A hospital in Anchorage, Alaska is seeking an experienced Director of Surgical Services to lead a high-performing perioperative division.
The Director ensures high-quality, patient-centered care through oversight of department operations, staffing, budgeting, quality initiatives, and strategic growth. This role fosters a culture of accountability, collaboration, and operational excellence while aligning surgical services with organizational goals.
This position reports directly to the Vice President of Operations and oversees four managers and approximately 125–150 FTEs.

Approximately 400 cases per month
Service lines include:
General Surgery
Bariatrics
Colorectal
Heart & Vascular
Orthopedics & Spine
Urology
Implement evidence-based practices to advance patient safety and clinical outcomes.
Ensure compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and legal standards.
Oversee equipment maintenance and regulatory adherence.
Improve patient throughput through forecasting and care coordination.
Standardize nursing practices and manage clinical variation.
Drive patient experience initiatives and service excellence strategies.
Utilize feedback metrics to benchmark and improve satisfaction scores.
Lead initiatives that differentiate the organization as a leader in surgical care.
Foster a culture aligned with mission, vision, and values.
Develop leadership within the perioperative team.
Recruit, mentor, and retain high-performing clinical and operational staff.
Oversee staff engagement and professional development initiatives.
Collaborate with physicians and executive leadership to expand service lines.
Identify opportunities for program development and technological advancement.
Support volume growth and strategic expansion initiatives.
Lead annual budget planning and financial forecasting.
Monitor departmental performance and address budget variances.
Manage labor productivity, staffing models, and premium pay utilization.
Identify cost-saving initiatives while maintaining quality care standards.
Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) – Required
Master’s Degree – Preferred
Minimum 1+ year recent experience as a Director of Surgical Services in acute care
Minimum 3+ years of applicable acute care Surgical Services experience
Strong perioperative leadership experience in multi-specialty surgical environments
Proven financial and operational management skills
Experience leading large teams (100+ FTEs preferred)
Strategic thinker with demonstrated service line growth initiatives
Strong collaboration skills with physicians and executive leadership
