Location: San Antonio, TX

Schedule: Full-Time | Days | No Weekends

Position Type: Permanent

Compensation:

  • Salary Range: $97,052 – $145,000 (based on years of experience)

  • Incentive Bonus: 17.5%

  • Relocation Assistance: Case-by-case basis

  • Sign-On Bonus: Case-by-case basis

Position Summary

The Director of Surgical Services provides strategic and operational leadership for all surgical and perioperative departments. This leader is responsible for ensuring high-quality, patient-centered care through oversight of daily operations, staffing, fiscal management, and long-term strategic planning.

The Director reports directly to the Chief Operating Officer and oversees approximately 50–60 FTEs. This role currently does not have a Surgical Services Manager, requiring a hands-on, visible leader with strong operational expertise.

Responsibilities

Quality & Clinical Excellence

  • Implement evidence-based practices to enhance patient safety and surgical outcomes.

  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory, accreditation, and legal standards.

  • Standardize clinical practice to improve efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

  • Oversee equipment maintenance and adherence to surgical best practices.

  • Promote interdisciplinary collaboration to ensure optimal patient care delivery.

Service & Patient Experience

  • Drive initiatives to enhance patient satisfaction and surgical experience.

  • Utilize performance feedback to improve service excellence.

  • Lead strategies focused on delivering exceptional, compassionate care.

People & Leadership

  • Foster a culture of accountability, engagement, and teamwork.

  • Recruit, develop, and retain high-performing surgical staff.

  • Provide mentorship, coaching, and performance management.

  • Ensure staffing models align with surgical volume and acuity.

Growth & Strategic Development

  • Collaborate with physicians and executive leadership to expand surgical service lines.

  • Identify opportunities to grow robotics and specialty procedures.

  • Support long-term strategic planning and service differentiation initiatives.

Financial & Operational Management

  • Lead annual budgeting and financial forecasting for surgical services.

  • Monitor labor productivity, premium pay utilization, and supply costs.

  • Identify cost-reduction opportunities while maintaining quality standards.

Department Overview

  • 5 Operating Rooms

  • ~4,000 surgical cases annually

  • Services include:

    • General Surgery

    • Orthopedics

    • Urology

    • ENT

    • Gynecology

    • Ophthalmology

    • Breast Surgery

    • Robotics

  • 50–60 FTEs

  • Reports directly to COO

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree required

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required

  • Master’s Degree preferred

Licensure

  • Active RN License (Texas or Compact State)

Experience

  • Minimum 3+ years of applicable leadership experience in Surgical Services required

  • Prior Director or Surgical Services Manager experience strongly preferred

  • Ambulatory Surgery Center leadership experience will be considered

  • Demonstrated operational, financial, and quality improvement success
