Purpose of the Role:
The Director of Plant Operations is responsible for leading and managing all aspects of daily operations at the facility. This role is essential for ensuring regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, and the delivery of high-quality compost products. By overseeing production, maintenance, safety, and team development, the Director of Plant Operations ensures McGill’s mission is realized through effective facility management and community engagement.

By coordinating plant operations, maintaining compliance, and nurturing a high-performing team, you help deliver quality products and foster positive relationships with customers, contractors, and the community. Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage daily plant operations, including scheduling incoming tonnages with Intake sales and coordinating compost production based on orders.
  • Ensure adherence to all regulatory agencies and permits, maintaining compliance at all times.
  • Supervise, train and develop production employees.
  • Oversee maintenance and servicing of equipment, including negotiating and scheduling outside contractors as needed.
  • Maintain inventory of parts and supplies for maintenance and preventative maintenance.
  • Administer company environmental, health, and safety policies; host inspectors, compliance officers, and regulatory agencies.
  • Control expenses and maintain P&L responsibility for the site.
  • Ensure quality products are produced and delivered on time to customers.
  • Build and maintain relationships with customers, contractors, vendors, and the public through communication, community outreach, and resource management.
  • Perform other duties as required or directed.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university; 6+ years related experience in Operations management, preferably in a manufacturing environment in the food, agricultural or waste industries; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Microsoft Excel, and Wasteworks.

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, reach, and use hands and arms to handle or operate tools, equipment, and materials. The employee frequently climbs stairs, bends, stoops, and moves about the facility, including outdoor and uneven terrain. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with or without assistance and may be required to push, pull, or maneuver heavy objects and equipment as part of daily operations. This position may require working in varying environmental conditions including heat, cold, humidity, odors, dust, and noise. The employee must be able to wear and properly utilize required personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, hard hats, and respiratory protection as necessary. Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Work Environment
Work is conducted in both indoor and outdoor areas of the facility. Employees may be exposed to dust, dirt, mud, loud noise, strong odors, heavy machinery in proximity, and potentially extreme weather conditions. Terrain may be uneven, soft, or shifting. Low/variable lighting and slip, trip, or fall hazards should be expected. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety harness, hard hat, high-visibility apparel, safety footwear, gloves, safety glasses, and issued lighting devices, will be provided and must be worn as required when on site.
