A Dispatcher is responsible for coordinating and managing the movement of vehicles, field personnel, equipment, or emergency services within a defined area. They receive calls or orders, schedule and dispatch staff or vehicles, monitor ongoing operations, and ensure timely and efficient service delivery.
They act as a central hub of communication between clients, field workers, drivers, and management.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

The specific tasks will vary depending on the kind of dispatcher role (logistics, emergency, utilities, etc.), but typical duties include:

  • Receive and evaluate incoming requests (calls, work orders, service requests)
  • Assign and dispatch personnel, vehicles, or resources in response to requests or according to schedules
  • Monitor the status and location of field units using radio, GPS, telematics, or dispatching software
  • Communicate route changes, job updates, delays, or issues to field units
  • Serve as liaison between clients/customers and field staff — relay instructions, clarify requests, resolve discrepancies
  • Track and report on job progress, completion, delays, and exceptions
  • Maintain logs, records, and databases (e.g. timesheets, mileage, fuel usage, repair records)
  • Use mapping tools / routing software to suggest efficient routes
  • Advise drivers / staff of traffic conditions, weather, detours, or hazards
  • Escalate major issues or emergencies to supervisors or other stakeholders
  • Prepare operational reports and metrics for management
  • Adhere to safety protocols, regulations, and company policies
  • In emergency dispatch roles: gather critical information from callers, triage, provide instructions, and dispatch appropriate emergency services
