Dispatcher – Intermodal Containers Job Summary
The Intermodal Dispatcher is responsible for coordinating the movement of shipping containers between rail terminals, ports, warehouses, and customer locations. This role ensures timely pickups and deliveries, manages driver schedules, monitors freight movement, and maintains communication with drivers, customers, and terminal personnel to maximize efficiency and customer satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
- Schedule and dispatch drivers for container pickups and deliveries.
- Coordinate intermodal freight movements between rail yards, ports, and customer facilities.
- Monitor driver locations and shipment status to ensure on-time service.
- Communicate with customers regarding delivery schedules, delays, and shipment updates.
- Track container availability, chassis usage, and appointment times.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, DOT regulations, and customer requirements.
- Resolve operational issues such as delays, equipment shortages, or route changes.
- Maintain accurate dispatch records and transportation management system (TMS) data.
- Verify driver paperwork, container numbers, and delivery documentation.
- Work closely with customer service, operations, and terminal personnel to improve efficiency.
- Manage daily load planning and optimize driver utilization.
- Monitor detention, demurrage, and other accessorial charges.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent; associate degree preferred.
- 2+ years of dispatching, logistics, transportation, or intermodal experience preferred.
- Knowledge of intermodal transportation, rail operations, ports, and container logistics.
- Experience using dispatch software, TMS systems, and GPS tracking platforms.
- Strong organizational and multitasking abilities.
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle changing priorities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel and Outlook.
Preferred Skills
- Knowledge of rail terminal procedures and container management.
