Dispatcher – Night Shift
Vincennes University Police Department
JOB DESCRIPTION:
This position reports to the Vincennes University Chief of Police. Under direct supervision, performs a variety of emergency and non-emergency communications and departmental administrative functions and monitors essential university, campus police safety and police equipment. This is a full-time, support staff position with benefits with a work period that runs from 11:30pm to 8:00am.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential Job Responsibilities

Answers emergency and non-emergency calls. Obtains pertinent information and refers callers to appropriate personnel.

Monitors and controls university police systems, including computer access control equipment and security cameras, scanning university areas for safety or security violations.

Reports any violations or unusual activity to police and/or university operations personnel.

Coordinates emergency and non-emergency radio communication from multiple university departments as well as local, State and Federal agencies.

Determines correct established procedure of action, priority, and which personnel to dispatch by maintaining knowledge of available units as well as emergency alert and disaster procedures.

Dispatches appropriate personnel and confirms police have arrived at their assigned zones. If directed, contacts outside agencies to request additional assistance.

Conducts daily checks on police radios and other safety and security equipment as determined by established procedures.

Pages/requests people; answers courtesy phones and provides information on a limited basis to the public.

Maintains current knowledge of all campus reservations, activities and areas closed for construction or repair.

Maintains the departments public relations and provides updated information when needed and necessary.

Enters offenses and incident reports into the computer system as well as dispatch reports and officer activity logs.

Assists University Police Department in its parking management operations, which includes sales and payment of violations.

Performs other related duties as required by the Chief of Police.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Where “preferred” is indicated, the qualification is not essential.
Education and Experience:

High School Diploma or G.E.D.
-
One-year experience in police, fire, and/or other emergency communications, preferred.
Licenses and Certifications:
-
NCIC certification, preferred
Knowledge and Skills:
-
Knowledge of police, fire, emergency medical, and maintenance dispatch procedures.

Knowledge of telephone switchboard, and radio operating requirements and techniques.

Knowledge of police, security and communication rules, regulations, and methods of operations, preferred.

Knowledge of access control, CCTV, security, and communication systems equipment, preferred.

Orally communicate clearly and effectively in emergency or non-emergency situations.

Respond quickly and accurately to events under all types of operating conditions.

Deal calmly, courteously, and respectfully with the public in all situations.

Document information accurately and clearly.

Operate a computer keyboard, mouse and Windows based application software.

Operate university radio communication systems.

Excellent communication skills and the ability to handle confidential information.
Physical Requirements:

The Dispatcher must have the ability to use a computer keyboard, mouse and Windows based application software and to orally communicate clearly and effectively in emergency or non-emergency situations. Individual must be able to handle many tasks at once and will be required to use various other University and Department systems and software.

The Dispatcher must be available to work M-F and some weekends, as required
Mental Requirements:

The Dispatcher must have the ability to take quick and accurate action under all circumstances.
