The DEI GIS Summer Intern will support the City’s ongoing equity initiatives by using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to analyze, visualize, and communicate demographic, community engagement, and service-access data. This internship blends equity-focused research with applied mapping and spatial analysis to help departments make more informed, inclusive decisions. The ideal candidate is passionate about equity, data-driven storytelling, and improving how cities understand and serve diverse communities.This is a full-time, seasonal position for Summer 2026.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Equity-Focused Data & MappingAssist in developing maps and dashboards illustrating demographic trends, service gaps, language access needs, and community
representation.Support the disaggregation of race/ethnicity, disability, language, gender, socioeconomics, and other key demographic data to better identify inequities.Conduct spatial analysis to examine patterns related to housing, parks access, transportation, environmental exposures, and civic participation.GIS Project SupportUpdate and maintain GIS layers relevant to DEI initiatives (e.g., cultural landmarks, accessibility features, neighborhood overlays, translation zones).Help build user-friendly StoryMaps or web applications to support DEI communications, training, or public engagement.Collaborate with the GIS Division to ensure accuracy, usability, and accessibility of map products.Research & EvaluationGather and analyze qualitative and quantitative data to support DEI projects, equity toolkits, and departmental
assessments.Review best practices for equity-centered mapping and propose methods to advance inclusive data
collection.Community Engagement SupportCreate visual tools that help community members better understand city services, programs, and engagement opportunities.Assist in preparing materials for DEI Commission meetings, public forums, and resident-facing presentations
