Job Duties: Works under the supervision of the Director of Legal Services. The paralegal contributes to the overall strategy for advancing the mission of the organization; handles a wide variety of immigration cases, including but not limited to family-based petitions, Citizenship Applications, Temporary Protected Status, and crime-based applications.

Case Management:
- Conducts in depth consultations and screenings with clients to assess their situation and needs
- Prepare immigration applications for relief under the supervision of the Director of Legal Services
- Investigate facts and law of case to determine causes of action/defenses and prepare case accordingly
- Provide referrals to other service providers as needed
- Manage cases in accordance with the case management policies of the Legal Department
- Follow up with clients regarding client progress toward legal goals
- Recommend and implement strategies to persuade clients to participate fully in their own legal process
- Interpretation for clients at interviews with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS)
- Translate document as needed for clients
- Drafting letters to clients and agencies
- Assist with drafting and editing correspondence to clients and other documents
- Assisting with financial matters including processing client invoices, accounts, and financial reports
- Contributes to the recruiting, supervision, and oversight of student interns and volunteers
Workshops:
- Conducts presentations and trainings to community and other organizations to promote the mission of the agency
- Assists in organizing, coordinating and conducting immigration/citizenship workshops throughout the year in partnership with other organizations, schools and community groups in the metro area.
Outreach
- Prepare marketing and outreach materials for the program
- Participate in outside meetings, forums, weekend community fairs as needed and/or requested to promote the Legal program in the community.
- Assist in distributing educational flyers and collaborate with other organizations and agencies to promote Legal events and our programs.
Record Keeping/Data Entry:
- Maintain accurate and comprehensive clients’ case files and all internal case management logs
- Ensures all cases worked on are inputted into Salesforce Database
- Filing, managing paper files and electronic files
Professional Development:
- Attends required trainings as determined by supervisor, contract, or agency,
- Participate in legal trainings or in any other seminar that helps to grow as a professional and acquire or retain DOJ Accreditation
- Actively seeks opportunities to attend trainings that help the individual improve their job performance and knowledge of the service they are providing.
- Training can include in-house training and retreats
Agency Participation:
- Participates in staff meetings, retreats, and events; participation in one organization committee;
- Participates in department meetings
- Cover front desk in accordance with the calendar.
Publicity & Marketing:
- Assist with drafting and editing publications and other documents
- Assist the Legal Director on media presence regarding Legal issues.
- Assist the Legal Director for maintaining social media presence updating once month Legal information in our website and Facebook page.
Network & Coalitions:
- Attend meetings to discuss policy issues affecting client population
Advocacy:
- Develop and maintains relationships with individuals, organizations and government agencies within the immigration advocacy community nationally and legal community in the Washington, DC region
- Participation in various coalition events, creating awareness of issues affecting the immigrant community.
Fundraising:
- Assist with drafting and editing reports, grant proposals, and other documents
- Assist Legal Director with fundraising activities for the program and agency.
- Assists administration to identify and secure a donation from individuals.
- Assists in ensuring contract requirements for all relevant contract obligations are met in a timely manner
- Prospects for future fundraising and program development.
- Assist with general fundraising efforts.
Other duties that pertain to CARECEN work may be assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications: Candidates should be bilingual/bicultural and possess a undergraduate-level degree or equivalent training and skills, including at least three years successful immigration experience, preferably with a non-profit agency. DOJ accreditation is required (Organization will ensure accreditation is done). Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to community service.
