Position Overview

We are seeking a detail-oriented Draftsperson / CAD Designer to join our museum exhibit design and fabrication team. This role is responsible for transforming exhibit design models into precise, build-ready shop drawings. Working closely with designers, fabricators, and project managers, the Draftsperson will produce accurate, clear, and complete fabrication documents that ensure our shop team can efficiently and accurately build interactive exhibits.

Key Responsibilities

  • Receive and review 3D models, concept drawings, and design intent documents from the design team.
  • Translate conceptual and 3D designs into fully detailed shop drawings, fabrication tickets, and assembly diagrams.
  • Produce accurate mechanical, structural, and material detailing for exhibit components.
  • Specify dimensions, tolerances, materials, and hardware required for fabrication.
  • Maintain drawing consistency, clarity, and adherence to internal standards.
  • Collaborate with fabricators to clarify design details, resolve construction challenges, and incorporate feedback.
  • Update and revise drawings as needed during the fabrication process.
  • Maintain organized drawing files and documentation in accordance with company standards.
  • Ensure drawings meet applicable safety, ADA, and engineering requirements for public exhibits.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Drafting, Industrial Design, Engineering Technology, or related field; or equivalent work experience.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (AutoCAD, Fusion360, SolidWorks, or similar) and familiarity with file translation from 3D modeling software.
  • Strong understanding of fabrication methods including woodworking, metalworking, plastics, and assembly processes.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and create technical drawings with accuracy.
  • Knowledge of materials, hardware, and fastener specifications.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with both designers and shop staff.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with varying deadlines.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience in museum, exhibit, or themed environment design/fabrication.
  • Knowledge of ADA and safety standards for public interactives.
  • Familiarity with CNC file preparation and other digital fabrication workflows.

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

  • Office and shop environment; occasional time on the fabrication floor.
  • Ability to sit at a workstation and use a computer for extended periods.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 25 lbs when working with physical prototypes or materials.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $23.00 - $25.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
