A driver for a home health business is responsible for safely transporting patients, employees, and medical supplies/equipment to and from designated locations while providing compassionate customer service and maintaining detailed records. Key Responsibilities
- Safe Transportation: Safely transport clients (who may have mobility challenges) to medical appointments, errands, or social activities, adhering to all traffic laws and safety protocols.
- Patient Assistance: Provide courteous and dignified assistance to patients when entering and exiting the vehicle, which may involve operating a wheelchair lift, securing mobility aids, and carrying personal belongings.
- Medical Deliveries: When required, deliver and pick up medical supplies and equipment, such as oxygen tanks or wheelchairs, to patients' homes or healthcare providers.
- Route Management: Plan and follow the most efficient routes using GPS or maps, manage schedules to ensure timely arrivals, and communicate any delays to dispatch or medical staff.
- Vehicle Maintenance: Perform daily pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections, ensure the vehicle remains clean and orderly, refuel as needed, and promptly report any maintenance or repair needs.
- Documentation and Compliance: Accurately complete transportation logs, mileage records, and other necessary paperwork, while maintaining patient confidentiality in compliance with regulations like HIPAA.
- Client Interaction: Foster a professional and empathetic relationship with clients, their families, and co-workers, addressing any special needs or concerns during transit.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Valid Driver's License: A current, valid driver's license with a clean driving record is mandatory.
- Background Check: Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screening.
- Physical Stamina: Physical fitness and the ability to lift or push up to 50 pounds (or more, depending on the specific role) to assist with patient mobility and equipment handling.
- Certifications: CPR and First Aid certification may be required or preferred.
- Soft Skills: Strong time management skills, attention to detail, excellent communication, patience, and a compassionate attitude toward the elderly or individuals with disabilities.
- Experience: Previous experience in a similar role, such as non-emergency medical transport or patient care, is often preferred.
