Does the opportunity to devote your talents to a cause much greater than yourself excite you? Do you enjoy being the go-to owner of a Drupal multisite ecosystem, from architecture decisions to day-to-day improvements? The Arbor Day Foundation is a place where you can do work that matters, with people who care. As we say at the Foundation: life is short, love where you work.
The Arbor Day Foundation is a global nonprofit inspiring people to plant, nurture, and celebrate trees. We foster a growing community of more than one million leaders, innovators, planters, and supporters united by our bold belief that a more hopeful future can be shaped through the power of trees.
Join the Arbor Day Foundation as a Drupal Developer and become the in-house owner of our Drupal 10 multisite ecosystem. You’ll help ensure our sites are secure, performant, and easy to build on - reducing dependency on external partners and accelerating delivery for our teams. This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys owning a platform end-to-end, partnering closely with designers and content teams, and improving systems over time -not just shipping features and moving on.
This role is based in Lincoln, Nebraska. Team members in Lincoln work in-office on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, with optional remote work on Wednesday and Friday. The Drupal Developer reports to the Manager of Software Engineering and partners closely with Digital Experience, UX/design, content, analytics, and external collaborators.
What You’ll Do:
Platform Reliability & Maintenance
- Plan and execute monthly Drupal core and module updates.
- Manage code, content, and database promotions across environments.
- Monitor uptime, performance, and release health in coordination with platform tools.
Component & Theme Development
- Extend and maintain Twig-based templates, view modes, and SCSS-backed components.
- Contribute to a scalable block library that empowers content editors.
- Uphold accessibility (WCAG) and technical SEO best practices.
Feature Delivery & Integrations
- Build and configure features that support membership, giving, and engagement.
- Implement integrations and enhancements aligned with business priorities.
Security & Governance
-
Proactively patch critical vulnerabilities.
- Partner with Infrastructure & Security on access controls, release standards, and compliance.
Collaboration & Enablement
- Work closely with designers, content strategists, and external partners.
- Create clear documentation and runbooks for deployments, updates, and component usage.
What You’ll Bring:
- Passion for the Foundation’s mission and a belief in the power of trees to create meaningful change for people and the planet.
- Our ideal candidate has 3–5+ years of building and maintaining Drupal 9/10 sites with custom modules and themes.
- Strong experience with Twig, PHP 8.x, MySQL, HTML/SCSS, and JavaScript.
- Hands-on ownership of update cadences, environment syncs, and regression testing.
- Experience working in CI/CD workflows like Git or Azure DevOps.
- Ability to translate stakeholder needs into durable, reusable components.
- Collaborative mindset and comfort working across design, content, and engineering teams.
What Success Looks Like:
- Be the trusted administrator of ADF’s Drupal 10 multisite platform, with predictable, on-time monthly updates and minimal security exposure
- Significantly reduce cycle time for site enhancements by enabling same-sprint delivery of improvements
- Maintain a stable, well-documented release process that internal teams can rely on
- Expand and refine the component and block library, making it easier for content teams to launch pages without engineering support
- Improve site performance, accessibility, and reliability across devices and browsers
- Serve as a proactive partner to Digital Experience, UX/design, and Engineering—anticipating needs rather than reacting to issues
