Dual Role Firefighter/EMT/AEMT/Paramedic - FY27

The Brattleboro Fire is a progressive, all-hazard department providing fire suppression, EMS transport, technical rescue, and hazardous materials response. We are seeking motivated individuals to join our team as firefighters/ EMS providers. Candidates must hold a current EMS certification/licensure at the date of hire. (EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic).

  • Firefighting experience is preferred but not required. We will provide training for qualified EMS professionals.

Work Schedule: As of July 1, 2026*
Firefighters will be scheduled to work by a 4-platoon system with each platoon on duty for an average of 42 hours per week. Firefighters will work 24 hours on / 48 hours off / 24 hours on / 96 hours off.

Compensation: FY 2027 annual salary before approved overtime and incentives.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from superior officers but must be able to act without direct supervision in emergencies.

Supervision Exercised: Exercises supervision only when the employee is designated to act in the capacity of an officer in the absence of an officer.

Key Responsibilities: Includes but not limited to:

  • Respond to emergency medical calls and provide patient care.
  • Participate in fire suppression, rescue operations, and hazardous materials response.
  • Work in an IDLH (Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health) atmosphere.
  • Respond to firehouse callbacks when available.
  • Operate and maintain fire apparatus and EMS equipment.
  • Perform station maintenance and attend required training.
  • Engage in fire prevention, public education, and community outreach.
  • Complete all written forms and documentation as required to include incident reports and prehospital care reports.
  • Maintain positive public relations and promote public safety.

Competencies Needed: We will consider any combination of relevant work experience, volunteering, education, and transferable skills as qualifying, unless specifically stated as required.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current Vermont or National Registry EMS certification (EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic required)
  • A current Vermont or National Registry Emergency Medical Responder certification may be approved by the Fire Chief with other valid Firefighter certifications.
  • Must hold and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Must obtain Vermont Firefighter I certification and CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test) within one year of hire (training provided).
  • Basic computer knowledge to include but not limited to Word and Outlook, with the ability to learn different reporting software.
  • Must be able to pass a thorough state and national criminal background checks, adult & child abuse registries, Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-3 (MMPI-3) screening, firefighter medical examination, drug test and not be listed on the Office of Inspector General (OIG) List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE), to meet the minimum prerequisites requirements for employment.
  • Must pass drug screening, medical exam, and meet NFPA 1582 medical standards annually.
  • o Must be able to pass the annual firefighter physical.
  • Must be able to establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, as well as with other agencies and the public.

o Ability to communicate effectively with the public, elected officials, and other government agencies.

  • Must be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

o Able to think quickly under pressure, react to always changing situations, and able to communicate effectively.

  • Ability to actively support in providing a welcoming workplace and respectful environment for all, including cultural competency, while working effectively across diverse cultures and constituencies.
  • Must be able to learn and retain instructions, policies and procedures and continue to learn new methods and stay current within the field.Additional preferred qualifications:

1. Knowledge of Brattleboro streets, hydrant systems, and local buildings.

2. Previous fire experience.

Work Environment: Firefighters should be strong team members, able to think quickly under pressure, react to always changing situations, and able to communicate effectively. Must be physically fit to perform the duties of the position, have good overall physical health, personal mobility, and the ability to work over long periods of time in less-than-ideal situations and in all weather conditions. Must be able to work from heights and in confined spaces. Bending, reaching, pulling, lifting, and occasionally moving up to 100 pounds are all necessary. Basic use of computers and keyboard. Must be able to work in a high-noise environment with frequent interruptions. Occasional evenings or weekends on day(s) off for training, special program events, or meetings.

Union Status: Represented by Firefighters Association, Local 4439. New employees are on probation for 1 year from date of hire or transfer.

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Employee (salaried with OT as approved or required).
