Summary

This position is responsible for maintaining a standard of excellence across all SCI publications. It oversees the content, production, printing and profitability of the bi-monthly Safari magazine and the monthly Safari Times newspaper and multi-edition SCI Record Books, while also contributing content and strategic input for associated websites. Additional responsibilities include supervising the development of materials requested by other SCI departments, the SCI Foundation (SCIF) and other Sporting Conservation International, Inc. (SCII) brands. The role establishes short-term and long-term growth strategies for Publications and collaborates with the vice president of Publications as well as the directors of the Advertising Sales and Marketing departments to raise the profile of SCI and SCII brands.

All applicants should demonstrate support of SCI’s “First for Hunters” mission, including: advocacy for legal, regulated hunting as a vital wildlife management tool, an appreciation of Second Amendment freedoms as they relate to hunting and the shooting sports, and strong knowledge of the hunting and shooting industry, including an understanding of firearm and archery products, ammunition, optics and gear.

Responsibilities

Serves as editor-in-chief of all SCI publications and SCIF materials. Establishes growth strategies and assesses resources, project costs and timing. Reviews editorial, production and sales statistics with the vice president of Publications and advertising sales staff.Sets performance goals for the Publications team and assists with advertising sales goals during the annual trade show season and at other times as opportunities arise. Assigns editors to assist advertising sales representatives as needed. Oversees the creation of pagecasts each issue of Safari and Safari Times. Assigns subject areas to editors and contributors for articles not supplied by SCI members or other SCI department staff. Meets with contributors while monitoring their contracts as applicable.Plays an integral role in creating a publications hub serving other SCI departments and SCII brands as applicable to reduce costs and minimize reliance on outside vendors.Meets regularly with SCI department heads and fellow members of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) to ensure the department is supporting all facets of SCI and all brands under the SCII umbrella. Also meets with SCI Executive Committee members as appropriate to enhance communication on behalf of Publications.Participates in market analysis and research with colleagues while evaluating publications produced by the competition.”Works with the art director to select cover art and images and implement publication redesigns or design updates.Instills editorial and design excellence. Works with the vice president of Publications and the art director to submit SCI publications for editorial and design awards. Manages editorial staff and coordinates production with art director and the graphic designer(s). Hires and trains editors. Motivates the team to work ahead of schedule as needed to allow for SCI staff travel or assignments that leave the office short-handed. Oversees requests from advertisers seeking editorial representation on factory visits and hunting trips and ensures they do not conflict with deadlines. Conducts performance appraisals and provides counsel to employees on disciplinary or performance issues. Provides employee recognition and addresses any issues brought forth by other departments or SCII brands. Builds the Publications budget in collaboration with the vice president and monitors and manages its execution. Approves editors' expenditures.Performs other related duties as assigned. Attends meetings, trade shows, and other events as necessary.  Qualifications

This position requires demonstrated editorial excellence, a bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or a related area, and 10-15 years of experience in the editing, publishing and printing of magazines and newspapers.A master’s degree the above fields is not required but preferred.Must be a highly skilled and accomplished editor and writer with excellent oral and written communication skills, demonstrating attention to detail, strong organizational abilities and exceptional customer service.Must be capable of using the Publications database, spreadsheets and graphic-presentation software programs and be able to quickly become proficient with the proprietary software needed for the performance of the essential functions of the position.Must possess knowledge of publishing laws and regulations. Must be a hunter  with extensive knowledge of the shooting sports industry, its products and use of those products. Experience with international hunting preferred.
