As the FAA’s MOSAIC rule takes full effect, this editor will play a key role in shaping Firecrown’s coverage of light-sport, experimental, kit-built, and recreational aviation.

This role will primarily support KITPLANES, while also contributing to Firecrown’s broader aviation portfolio across digital, print, newsletters, and special editorial projects. The ideal candidate will bring strong editorial judgment, deep subject matter knowledge, and the ability to translate technical, regulatory, and market developments into compelling content for highly engaged aviation audiences.

This position may be structured as either a full-time role or contractor opportunity, depending on the candidate’s experience and fit.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead editorial coverage of light-sport, experimental, kit-built, and related segments of general aviation.
  • Produce and refine engaging, accurate editorial content including news stories, explainers, features, aircraft profiles, pilot-focused service journalism, and industry analysis.
  • Track and interpret major regulatory, product, and market developments related to MOSAIC, light-sport aircraft, amateur-built aircraft, and recreational aviation.
  • Support editorial planning and content development for KITPLANES across both digital and print platforms.
  • Contribute editorial expertise and subject matter support to other Firecrown aviation brands as needed.
  • Work with editors, contributors, and freelancers to develop, assign, and edit stories that meet Firecrown’s editorial standards.
  • Identify opportunities for recurring coverage, special editorial packages, newsletters, and evergreen content tied to the evolving light-sport and experimental aviation market.
  • Optimize digital content for SEO, audience engagement, and discoverability.
  • Maintain a strong working knowledge of the aircraft, companies, builders, pilots, products, and trends shaping the sector.
  • Collaborate across editorial, audience, and commercial teams to align content with broader brand and business goals.
  • Leverage AI and digital tools where appropriate to support research, workflow efficiency, and content development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the overall success of Firecrown’s aviation media properties.

Requirements:

  • Strong writing and editing skills, with expertise in digital journalism and AP Style.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of light-sport, experimental, kit-built, and recreational aviation.
  • Ability to translate technical and regulatory topics into clear, accessible, and engaging journalism.
  • Experience producing aviation-related editorial content for digital, print, or both.
  • Strong editorial judgment and attention to accuracy, nuance, and detail.
  • Familiarity with the general aviation industry, especially owner-flown, recreational, and experimental segments.
  • Experience with content management systems (CMS), web publishing, and digital editorial workflows.
  • Understanding of SEO best practices and audience development strategies.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced editorial environment.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, including experience working with contributors and cross-functional teams.
  • Familiarity with AI and analytical tools for content creation and performance tracking is a plus.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Pilot’s license strongly preferred.
  • Hands-on experience in general aviation, experimental aviation, aircraft building, flight training, or related sectors is a plus.
  • Existing industry knowledge and source relationships within the light-sport, experimental, and kit aircraft community are a plus.
