The San Diego Unified School District is seeking motivated individuals for the position of Educational Transcriber I. This is a unique hourly training opportunity designed to bridge the communication gap for hearing-impaired students. As an Educational Transcriber I, you will learn to provide real-time captioning and printed notes, ensuring every student has equitable access to their education. This role may serve as a direct pathway to permanent, benefited position(s) within the District. Please note that this position requires a specific, mandatory training period as outlined below. Under general supervision of certificated staff or an administrator the Educational Transcriber I will complete district approved transcription training program, including 80 hours online training program and 80 hours shadowing trained transcribers in classrooms at various school sites.

CURRENT HOURLY-SUBSTITUTE POSITION INFORMATION:
Required Training Commitment - District Caption Training
To succeed in this role, candidates must be able to commit to the following initial training phase:
Duration: 8–10 weeks of intensive instruction.
Hours: 80 hours of online training plus 80 hours of hands-on shadowing.
Daily Schedule: Monday through Friday, 4 hours per day.
Location: Training is conducted on-campus at the Low Incidence Department (4833 Doliva Drive, San Diego, CA).
Progression: Successful completion of this program is required to qualify for Educational Transcriber II positions, which offer full benefits and regular monthly schedules.
Hourly position and does not offer benefits.
This position is paid on the Paraeducator Salary Schedule. Grade 024. To view the Salary Schedule, click here.
Individuals that successfully complete the District Caption Training Program, which includes on-the-job captioning experience in a school setting, may qualify to apply for regular monthly, benefited job opportunities in the position series.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
Any combination of education, experience, and/or training equivalent to graduation from high school. This is the entry-level position in preparation for advancement to the higher-level Educational Transcriber II position. Completion of a district-approved transcription training program is required as part of this position.
