Fit-Out Duct Installers

1. Planning, Interpretation, and Measurement

  • Blueprint Analysis: Reading and accurately interpreting HVAC shop drawings, reflected ceiling plans (RCPs), and MEP coordination drawings to determine precise duct routing, size, and layout, often needing to navigate around existing structures and other services.
  • On-Site Measurement: Taking precise field measurements to ensure that prefabricated or site-fabricated duct sections fit perfectly, especially for challenging areas like offsets, transitions, and tight ceiling plenums.
  • Material Selection: Handling and working with various materials used in fit-outs, primarily Galvanized Iron (GI), Pre-Insulated (PI) panels, and flexible ducts, selecting the appropriate material for each section based on specifications.

2. Installation and Assembly

  • Support System Installation: Marking and installing appropriate support structures, such as trapeze hangers, threaded rods, and brackets, ensuring they are correctly leveled and securely fastened to safely support the ductwork according to SMACNA standards (Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors' National Association).
  • Duct Assembly: Assembling and securely joining straight duct runs, elbows, reducers, and transitions using approved joining methods (e.g., TDF, slip-and-drive cleats, or specialized PI jointing tools).
  • Accessory Installation: Installing necessary duct accessories within the runs, including:
  • Volume Control Dampers (VCDs) for air balancing.
  • Fire/Smoke Dampers (FD/SD), ensuring correct placement and linkage to fire barriers.
  • Access doors for maintenance and inspection.

3. Sealing, Insulation, and Quality Control

  • Airtight Sealing: Crucially, meticulously sealing all duct joints and seams (both internally and externally) with approved sealants (e.g., mastic or specialized foil tape) to achieve system air tightness, which is vital for energy efficiency and compliance.
  • Thermal and Acoustic Insulation: Applying and securing the specified thermal and acoustic insulation and vapor barriers around the ductwork to prevent energy loss and condensation (sweating), and reduce noise transfer.
  • Terminal Installation: Installing grilles, registers, diffusers, and linear slots onto the duct runs, ensuring they are perfectly aligned with the architectural ceiling and wall finishes for aesthetic completeness and proper airflow.

4. Coordination and Safety

  • Clash Resolution: Actively collaborating with other site trades (Electricians, Plumbers, Civil/Ceiling teams) to resolve pipe, conduit, or structural clashes, often requiring creative solutions to route ductwork in tight spaces.
  • Air Balance Preparation: Ensuring all installed VCDs are functional and access points are clear for the final Testing, Adjusting, and Balancing (TAB) procedures to be carried out by the HVAC Technician.
  • Site Safety: Strict adherence to all site-specific safety protocols, especially when working at heights (ladders, scaffolding, scissor lifts) and handling sharp sheet metal.
