Job Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled and safety-focused Electrical Technician with proven experience in oil & gas environments to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair electrical equipment in hazardous area classifications. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with upstream/downstream electrical systems, explosion-proof installations, and stringent permit-to-work systems. You will ensure the reliability of critical electrical infrastructure supporting continuous operations in demanding offshore/onshore facilities.
Key Responsibilities
1. Maintenance & Inspection
- Perform preventive and predictive maintenance on electrical equipment in classified hazardous areas (Zone 1, Zone 2).
- Conduct thermographic surveys, insulation resistance testing, and motor current analysis.
- Maintain and inspect:
- EX-rated equipment: Lighting, junction boxes, control panels, motors, and instrumentation
- HV/LV Switchgear: Circuit breakers, protection relays, and motor control centers (MCC)
- Generators & UPS Systems: Diesel generators, static UPS, and battery banks
- Substation Equipment: Transformers, busbars, and capacitor banks
- Execute maintenance per OEM manuals and company CMMS schedules.
2. Troubleshooting & Repairs
- Diagnose and rectify faults in electrical circuits, motor drives, and control systems.
- Troubleshoot PLC/DCS interface faults and instrumentation loops.
- Repair or replace defective components: contactors, relays, fuses, cables, and EXd/EXe enclosures.
- Support commissioning of new electrical installations and system upgrades.
3. Safety & Compliance
- Strictly adhere to PTW (Permit to Work), LOTO, and electrical safety rules.
- Implement hazardous area work procedures (IEC 60079 standards).
- Conduct gas testing and ensure area classification compliance before work.
- Follow COMPANY HSE standards, emergency response protocols, and SIMOPS guidelines.
4. Documentation & Reporting
- Complete work orders, test reports, and equipment history in CMMS (SAP, Maximo).
- Update electrical drawings, loop diagrams, and equipment certifications.
- Report near misses, incidents, and potential hazards immediately.
- Manage electrical spare parts inventory and critical spares.
Qualifications & Requirements
Mandatory:
- Diploma in Electrical Engineering or equivalent technical certification.
- Minimum 3 years experience in oil & gas electrical maintenance (offshore/onshore).
- COMPEX Certification (Ex01-Ex04) for hazardous area installations.
- Experience with:
- HV systems up to 33kV and LV distribution
- EXd, EXe, EXi, and EXp protection techniques
- Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) and soft starters
- Emergency shutdown systems (ESD) and fire & gas systems
- Ability to interpret P&IDs, SLDs, and loop diagrams.
- Physically fit for offshore/remote site work, confined space entry, and working at heights.
Preferred:
- HV/LV Authorized Person certification.
- Experience in:
- FPSO, drilling rigs, or LNG plant electrical systems
- Gas compression and pipeline electrical equipment
- Cathodic protection and earthing systems
- Knowledge of:
- IEC, API, and ATEX standards
- SIL-rated systems and functional safety
- GCC experience with QatarEnergy/RasGas/Shell standards.
- First Aid/BOSIET/HUET certification for offshore roles.
Technical Skills:
- Proficient with electrical test equipment: meggers, power analyzers, relay test sets
- PLC/DCS basic troubleshooting (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Yokogawa)
- Computer literacy in MS Office and CMMS systems
Soft Skills:
- Strong safety mindset and procedural discipline
- Problem-solving ability under pressure
- Team player with clear communication skills
- Adaptable to shift patterns (14/21, 28/28 rotations)
Working Conditions
- Location: Onshore plant, offshore platform, or remote desert site
- Schedule: Rotational shift pattern (e.g., 14 days on/14 days off) with 12-hour shifts
- Environment: Hazardous classified areas, extreme temperatures, and potentially exposed heights/platforms
- Physical Requirements: Ability to lift 20kg, climb vertical ladders, and wear PPE for extended periods
