Acton Academy East Bay is hiring!

Do you want to change the world? Do you crave working hard with a small, mission-driven, world-class team of entrepreneurs and community members changing the vision of school?

Description:

If your passion is to fuel the love of learning in others while advancing your own personal and professional growth, this is your chance to become a part of one of the world’s most innovative schools. If this statement seems too bold to be true, simply search the web for "Seth Godin Acton Academy."

Acton Academy Overview:

Acton Academy East Bay, founded in 2017, is a private micro-school and learner-driven community with the mission that each person who enters its doors will find a calling and change the world. We combine elements of the Montessori method with Socratic guiding and hands-on experiential quests. Underlying our method is an application of the Hero’s Journey creating a lively learning environment that feels more like an adventure than school.

Our Approach:

At Acton, we have mixed-aged classrooms called "studios" with a self-paced learning design as opposed to grade levels. Our real-world-oriented quests culminate in a public exhibition of learning as opposed to test scores and report cards. In all areas of Acton life, our students are empowered to be in the driver’s seat of their learning.

Positions: Lower-Elementary, Elementary or Middle School Guide

We are hiring full-time Guides to work with our wonderful learners. We are looking for a self-motivated, entrepreneurial individual who is passionate about guiding children on their independent journey of lifelong learning, and who understands "unschooling" or self-directed education at lower ages. We have built in a period of overlap with our current, amazing Guide who is moving out of state, in order to seamlessly hand off the studio systems and curriculum that are already in place.

A Guide’s ultimate goals are to Equip, Connect, and Inspire. Successful guides equip learners to explore and take ownership of their learning, monitor progress on curriculum and create life-oriented projects that nurture curiosity.

Guides will hold students accountable to their promises and to delivering “the best they can do” as they discover and pursue a calling on a hero’s journey

Key Responsibilities:

  • Guide young people on their independent journey of lifelong learning by asking insightful questions.
  • Lead Socratic discussions and work with the Acton Academy learning design, processes, and systems.
  • Equip our Creators to explore and take ownership of their learning, monitor progress on the curriculum, and create life-oriented projects that nurture curiosity.
  • Commit to grow yourself as a Guide and on your own hero's journey by attending self-paced online and in-person offsite trainings couple times a year.
  • Co-create and launch quests (projects), including daily challenges and curating world-class examples supply a positive classroom environment and set up a classroom as inspiration for learning
  • Learn how to present Montessori learning materials to students and support students in the use of those materials
  • Guide art and PE activities
  • Encourage young heroes to track their progress to show parents, peers, and apprenticeship employers what they can do
  • Evaluate and refine existing curriculum, designing and experimenting with new projects, tools, and approaches
  • Help lead, organize, execute, and host our annual Children's Business Fair (participants will be children from East Bay counties)
  • Demonstrate a deep commitment to the success of Acton Academy East Bay

Commitments:

Your promises to us:

  • Respect the pace of each individual child and allow opportunities for success and failures to take place, granting full ownership of responsibility to the heroes
  • Ask questions that encourage the child to develop a discipline for truth seeking
