Position Overview:
The 1st Grade Math Teacher will be responsible for designing and delivering high-quality mathematics instruction that develops foundational numeracy skills, including number sense, operations, problem-solving, and mathematical reasoning. The teacher will assess student progress toward Wisconsin Math Standards and collaborate with colleagues, school leaders, and families to create a nurturing and engaging learning environment where all scholars build confidence and curiosity in math.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan and implement engaging, standards-aligned math lessons focused on number operations, geometry, measurement, and data based on the Wisconsin Academic Standards for 1st Grade
- Use formative and summative assessments to monitor and evaluate student understanding and mathematical growth
- Differentiate instruction to support diverse learners, including those needing intervention and those ready for enrichment
- Foster a positive, inclusive, and culturally responsive classroom environment that promotes curiosity, perseverance, and a growth mindset in mathematics
- Integrate real-world connections and hands-on learning experiences that make math meaningful and relevant for scholars
- Collaborate regularly with instructional teams and participate in ongoing professional development to strengthen math pedagogy and best practices
- Maintain consistent communication with families about academic progress, math skill development, and behavior
- Support school-wide math initiatives and contribute to building a college- and career-ready culture
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education, Mathematics, or a related field (required)
- Valid Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) teaching license or eligibility to obtain licensure in Mathematics for elementary grades (required)
- Strong knowledge of early math development, number sense, and effective instructional strategies for 1st grade mathematics
- Experience working in urban education or high-needs schools (preferred)
- Commitment to educational equity and culturally relevant pedagogy
- Excellent classroom management, communication, and organizational skills
