Embedded Systems Engineer

Boston, United States

About AgZen:

AgZen is tackling two of agriculture's biggest challenges: waste and pollution.

Each year, billions are spent on pesticides and fertilizers, yet most never reach the crops - resulting in costly waste and significant environmental harm. We're changing that. By using machine learning, computer vision, and fluid dynamics, AgZen optimizes chemical application in real time, reducing input use, minimizing pollution, and protecting both yields and ecosystems.

Founded out of MIT and backed by $13.5M in funding, our multidisciplinary team of engineers and ag science experts is redefining sustainable farming with breakthrough technology. We're not just improving agriculture, we're reimagining what's possible.

About the Role:

As an Embedded Systems Engineer you will serve as a fulcrum for our tech stack as an instrumental member of our electrical team. You will be a key contributor to the firmware that interfaces our computer vision hardware with our software pipelines, in turn creating value for our customers. Although prior experience is a positive, we are looking for a candidate that is curious, displays practical engineering skills, and is committed to building robust systems.

📍 This role is located in Somerville, MA (Boston area) with work required to be in-person.

What You'll Do:

  • Spearhead development of firmware to power AgZen's agtech computer vision systems
  • Architect and implement device drivers across multiple protocols (CAN, I2C, SPI, RS485)
  • Create robust interfaces for environmental, motion, and position sensing systems
  • Collaborate across hardware, software and field operations teams to integrate feedback and rapidly respond to customer needs and business priorities when required
  • Engineer fault-tolerant systems with graceful failure recovery
  • Build in-depth firmware validation tooling
  • Develop clear documentation for code, architecture, and interfaces

What We're Looking For:

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science/Electrical Engineering/related field, or equivalent experience
  • 2+ years of embedded systems/firmware development experience
  • Proficiency in C/C++ programming
  • Experience with ARM microcontrollers, preferably including STM32
  • Hands-on work with standard embedded communication protocols (CAN, I2C, SPI, RS485, etc.)
  • Competence with git, preferably including CI/CD workflows

Preferred:

  • Experience with modern C++ standards (C++17/20)
  • Understanding of RTOS concepts and applications
  • Proficiency with embedded debugging tools (SWD, JTAG, SWO, GDB, etc.)
  • Familiarity with OTA (over-the-air) firmware update systems
  • Knowledge of agricultural equipment reliability requirements
  • Experience with automated testing of embedded systems
  • Track record designing resilient, fault-tolerant systems
  • Familiarity with ISO11783 networks

What We Offer:

The opportunity to make an immediate and visible impact in a fast-growing company, competitive salary, early-employee equity, 401(k) with employer matching, 6 weeks of PTO, paid holidays, health, dental, and vision insurance.
