Embedded Systems & IoT Engineer

Role Overview

We are looking for a hands-on Embedded Systems & IoT Engineer to own and advance our wireless motor control and smart shade product development. This is a high-impact, greenfield role — you will be the primary technical owner of our IoT platform, from firmware to silicon selection to protocol architecture. You will work directly with the founding team and have broad influence over the product roadmap.

This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a small-company environment, moves fast, and wants to build something meaningful — not maintain someone else's codebase.

What You'll Own

Firmware & Embedded Development

  • Design, develop, and maintain firmware for motorized shade controllers and wireless bridge devices
  • Work with low-power MCUs and SoCs (ARM Cortex-M series, Silicon Labs EFR32 family preferred)
  • Implement motor control logic including speed ramping, torque limits, position tracking, and obstruction detection
  • Write clean, production-quality C/C++ firmware with a focus on reliability and OTA updateability

Wireless & IoT Protocol Stack

  • Lead development on wireless protocols
  • Design and optimize mesh network topologies for multi-device shade installations
  • Architect IP bridge / multi-coordinator solutions for large-scale deployments
  • Manage Silicon Labs SDK integration (Simplicity Studio, GSDK, Zigbee stack)

Hardware Collaboration

  • Collaborate with or lead PCB design and schematic review for new motor controller boards
  • Define hardware requirements including power management, antenna design, and EMC considerations
  • Oversee bring-up of new hardware revisions and debug issues across the full stack

Motor & Mechanical Integration

  • Develop and tune motor drive firmware for DC tubular motors used in roller shade applications
  • Specify motor parameters (torque, speed, current draw) in collaboration with mechanical and product teams
  • Support integration of spring assist and zero-gravity mechanical systems with motor control logic

Platform & Tools

  • Build and maintain internal development tooling, test fixtures, and CI/CD pipelines for firmware
  • Own the over-the-air (OTA) update system for deployed devices in the field
  • Contribute to IP documentation and help protect proprietary technical developments

What We Offer

  • Competitive base salary: $110,000 – $150,000 depending on experience
  • Direct access to company leadership and real ownership over your technical domain
  • Opportunity to shape a proprietary wireless platform from the ground up
  • Collaborative, low-bureaucracy environment with fast decision-making
  • Health benefits, PTO, and equipment budget
  • Austin, TX headquarters with flexibility for hybrid arrangements

Required

  • 3+ years of hands-on embedded firmware development in a production environment
  • Proficiency in C and/or C++ for resource-constrained microcontrollers
  • Direct experience with Zigbee protocol development (not just application-layer — stack-level knowledge)
  • Familiarity with Silicon Labs EFR32 chipsets or similar Zigbee/Sub-GHz SoC platforms
  • Experience with RTOS environments (FreeRTOS, Micrium, or similar)
  • Strong debugging skills: logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, JTAG/SWD, packet sniffers
  • Ability to read and mark up schematics and PCB layouts

Strongly Preferred

  • Experience with wireless protocols and antenna considerations
  • Familiarity with Matter over Thread
  • Motor control experience (DC brushed/brushless, stepper, or tubular motors)
  • Prior work in window coverings, smart home, HVAC, or building automation industries
  • Experience building OTA update infrastructure for IoT devices
  • Contributions to patent applications or IP documentation

Nice to Have

  • KiCad, Altium, or Eagle PCB design experience
  • Python scripting for test automation or tooling
  • Experience with Tuya or similar IoT cloud platforms (even if only to understand and differentiate from)
