Job Summary
The Emergency Physician is responsible for providing immediate assessment, resuscitation, stabilization, and management of patients presenting to the Emergency Department. The role requires rapid clinical decision-making, adherence to clinical protocols, coordination with multidisciplinary teams, and strict compliance with NABH standards, patient safety goals, and hospital policies.
Key Responsibilities
1. Clinical Responsibilities
- Provide immediate triage, assessment, diagnosis, and management of emergency patients.
- Manage medical, surgical, trauma, cardiac, neurological, pediatric, and obstetric emergencies.
- Perform advanced life support procedures (ACLS, BLS, ATLS protocols).
- Stabilize critically ill patients prior to transfer to ICU/OT/ward.
- Perform emergency procedures including:
- Intubation and airway management
- Central line insertion
- Arterial line placement
- Chest tube insertion
- Suturing and wound management
- Defibrillation and cardioversion
- Ensure timely referral and coordination with specialty consultants.
- Ensure appropriate documentation of clinical findings, diagnosis, treatment plan, and consent.
2. NABH & Quality Compliance Responsibilities
- Adhere to NABH 6th Edition standards and measurable elements applicable to Emergency Services.
- Ensure compliance with:
- Patient identification protocols
- Medication safety practices
- Informed consent procedures
- Time-bound documentation
- Emergency triage protocols
- Participate in:
- Clinical audits
- Mortality & morbidity meetings
- Quality improvement initiatives
- Report sentinel events, adverse events, and near misses as per hospital policy.
- Follow hospital infection control protocols and antimicrobial stewardship guidelines.
3. Patient Safety & Infection Control
- Strict adherence to hand hygiene protocols.
- Ensure compliance with PPE usage and biomedical waste segregation.
- Follow isolation protocols for infectious patients.
- Participate in Code Blue, Code Red, and disaster management drills.
- Maintain safe medication administration practices.
4. Documentation & Record Management
- Maintain accurate and complete medical records in EMR/manual format.
- Ensure proper completion of:
- Emergency case sheets
- Medico-legal documentation
- Death summaries
- Referral notes
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information.
5. Medico-Legal Responsibilities
- Handle medico-legal cases (MLC) as per statutory requirements.
- Ensure proper documentation and police intimation where required.
- Maintain professional and ethical standards in all emergency cases.
6. Coordination & Communication
- Coordinate with ICU, OT, Radiology, Laboratory, and Blood Bank for urgent cases.
- Communicate effectively with patient relatives regarding condition and prognosis.
- Ensure smooth handover during shift change with proper documentation.
- Participate in interdisciplinary case discussions.
7. Training & Academic Responsibilities
- Participate in CME programs and departmental academic activities.
- Train junior doctors, nurses, and paramedical staff in emergency protocols.
- Assist in mock drills and emergency preparedness training.
Qualification Required:
- MBBS
- MEM (Master of Emergency Medicine)
- Valid Kerala Medical Council Registration
- Certification in ACLS & BLS (ATLS preferred)
Preferred:
- Experience in tertiary care hospital ER
- Exposure to NABH-accredited hospital systems
- Strong decision-making and crisis management skills
