JOB
Performs professional protective work providing firefighting services, in addition to emergency and nonemergency rescue services; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Responds to fires, medical emergencies, hazardous materials incidents, and other natural and manmade disasters and rescue events with other career and volunteer members of the Powhatan County Fire and Rescue Department; maintains records and files; prepares reports.Examines patients; provides appropriate care; completes reports; relays information to providers of higher care.Drives and operates various types of fire and rescue equipment.Assures that emergency vehicles are fully stocked, equipped, cleaned, and in good running order.Provides leadership depending on the nature of the incident and the affiliation and certification of other response personnel.Maintains cleanliness and state of readiness of fire and rescue stations, apparatus, and all related equipment.Performs community service activities.Completes all required reports for all incidents his or her crew responds toAttends training sessions as required.Assist with operations during emergency management activities.Performs related tasks as required and assigned.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Thorough knowledge in rescue and emergency service delivery.Ability to think and act quickly and appropriately in all situations.Extensive knowledge of the geography of the county including street system and physical layout.Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions.Ability to prepare clear and concise written and electronic reports.Ability to work with related agencies on local, state, and federal levels, such as law enforcement, forestry, environmental protection, health, and emergency management.Ability to function as a leader, follower, or advisor based on the prevailing situation at the scene of an emergency and in the stations.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and public.The supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the results. During high-risk activities, the supervisor may provide direct supervision of work.
