ENGINEER-IN-TRAINING I

Under the direction of the Project Manager(s), the Engineer-in-Training I (EIT I) is responsible for executing a variety of engineering tasks related to the firm’s technical operations. This role supports the design, analysis, and documentation of structural projects across industrial, commercial, residential, education, and public works sectors. This position is intended to apply mentorship, professional growth, and practical experience toward professional licensure as a Professional/Structural Engineer.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Complete basic design and detailing of building structures, including steel, concrete, wood, masonry, and deep foundation systems.
  • Perform complex design and structural calculations with a high level of accuracy.
  • Use AutoCAD, Revit, and/or other design software to produce construction documents.
  • Conduct technical assessments and feasibility studies including site investigations.
  • Manage time resources effectively and work within project budgets.
  • Make recommendations or present alternative solutions to problems.
  • Exhibit professional and confident demeanor with clients and colleagues.
  • Undertake professional training, both formal (webinars, classes, seminars) and informal (technical journals, etc.).
  • Present technical reports at staff meetings.

Supervisory Responsibility: None.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Zero to three years of structural engineering experience is required.
  • One internship completed in the structural engineering discipline is strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency in structural drafting using AutoCAD and REVIT is preferred.
  • Familiarity with construction methods, materials, building codes, and structural systems.
  • Ability to coordinate and/or contribute to more than one project at a time.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to produce accurate, high-quality work.
  • Effective time management skills and capability to meet project deadlines.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills with a collaborative mindset.

Preferred Skills & Experience

  • Experience with engineering steel, concrete, wood, and masonry structures.
  • Experience with industrial, commercial, and public works projects.

Education & Licensure

  • Successful completion of California’s Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam is required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or Structural Engineering from an ABET-accredited program is required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

May require the ability to sit for long periods of time, stand, walk, and manipulate (carry, lift, move) light to medium weights up to 25 pounds. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate technical equipment, read technical information, and analyze complex data, as well as good hearing and speaking abilities to exchange information on the phone or in person. May require field visits to document conditions of existing buildings and construction sites.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Position Classification: Hourly (Non-exempt)

Work Environment:

Duties and responsibilities are generally performed in an office setting with occasional travel to conduct business including but not limited to visits to project work sites, off-site meetings, and/or work-related errands. Visits to project work sites may involve climbing ladders, walking on roofs, and following job site safety policies. Typically, the workweek is Monday through Friday, between the hours of 8:00 am and 5:00 pm. Overtime and weekend hours may be necessary at times.
