Engineering Internship - Summer 2026

The Engineering Intern will receive hands-on experience at BiVACOR in one or more departments (Mechanical, Electrical, Verification and/or Manufacturing). The engineering intern / co-op will be assisting experienced engineers in either the design, manufacture and/or verification testing of the BiVACOR total artificial heart. The engineering intern will gain valuable experience and contribute to the development of Class III Active Medical Devices (AIMD). The intern will report to experienced engineers and collaborate on daily tasks and activities.

RESPONSIBILITIES

- Mechanical Engineer Intern

o Be proficient in drafting software (i.e. SolidWorks)

o Assist with the development, process development and manufacturing of all implantable subsystems and implant tools

o Assist with the development of test rigs and conduct experiments for design, process development and verification and validation

- Electrical Engineer Intern

o Assist with controller inspection tests and inspection documents

o Assist with manufacturing of the controller and peripheries by documenting build of materials, work instructions and travellers

o Assist with conducting design assurance test of the controller and peripheral components, which includes analysis and reporting

o Be proficient in the use of debugging equipment (i.e. Oscilloscope, signal generators, and related equipment)

- Verification Engineer Intern

o Assist with developing test fixtures within a Quality Management System

o Test new designs (functional testing, mechanical testing, and simulated use)

o Assist with coordination of external vendors for verification tests

o Assist with analysis of test results using Matlab and/or Microsoft Excel

o Assist in documenting verification tests for regulatory submission

- Manufacturing Engineering Intern

o Design, develop, and improve manufacturing processes to enhance efficiency and product quality.

o Design, procure, and validate equipment, tools, and fixtures for manufacturing processes.

o Conduct process validations (IQ, OQ, PQ) and ensure compliance with FDA, ISO 13485, and GMP standards.

o Support NC/CAPA investigations and implement corrective actions.

o Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement solutions to enhance productivity and reduce costs.

Requirements

Preferred Qualifications/Education/Core Competencies:

- Currently enrolled (4th year) / recently graduated as a student with degree in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Bioengineering etc.

- Comfortable working in laboratory environment and within a Quality Management System.

- Hands-on and highly motivated

- Able to follow procedures (SOPs, WI, Test Protocols) and clearly communicate data results.

- Good scholastic standing (3.0+ GPA or equivalent)

Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to perform light material handling tasks involving lifting weights of up to 35 pounds for short durations. This position will involve sitting for extended periods of time, up to and sometimes beyond 8 hours a day. Duties also will involve keyboard data entry.

Pay: $25.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
