Environmental Engineer 1

Position Overview

BLOC Resources is seeking a highly motivated and analytical Environmental Engineer 1 to support water resource and reservoir management operations within a leading hydroelectric generation environment. This role is ideal for an early-career engineer with a strong interest in water resources, hydrology, and environmental systems.

The Environmental Engineer 1 will support hydro reservoir operations across multiple watersheds, contributing to operational forecasting, flood control, and drought management. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient management of water systems that support hydroelectric power generation.

The role involves working with advanced software systems, real-time instrumentation, hydrologic data, and modeling tools, including the Hydro Optimization Management System (HOMS). The engineer will collaborate with cross-functional teams to analyze data, support system operations, and improve overall watershed and reservoir performance.

This is a hybrid position, requiring 3 days in-office and 2 days remote, with additional expectations to support operations outside normal business hours, including 1–2 weekends per month, particularly during critical weather or flood events.

Key Responsibilities

The Environmental Engineer 1 will support a wide range of water resource and system operations, including:

Water Resource & Reservoir Management

  • Support hydro operations forecasting, including water level management, flood control planning, and drought mitigation strategies
  • Assist in implementing water control plans across multiple watersheds
  • Monitor and analyze reservoir conditions to support operational decision-making

Hydrologic, Hydraulic & Watershed Modeling

  • Perform and support hydrologic and hydraulic modeling to evaluate water flow, system performance, and risk scenarios
  • Assist in watershed modeling using industry-standard tools and software
  • Contribute to the development and configuration of computer-based models for system optimization

Data Collection & Instrumentation Support

  • Support operation and maintenance of remote real-time instrumentation systems, including rain gauges, stage sensors, and temperature sensors
  • Assist in the collection, validation, and analysis of hydrologic and environmental data
  • Ensure data accuracy and availability for operational and modeling purposes

Systems & Software Support

  • Support operation and maintenance of internal systems, including the Hydro Optimization Management System (HOMS)
  • Assist with computer system management, configuration, and troubleshooting
  • Contribute to programming and scripting efforts to enhance software tools and operational efficiency

Analysis, Reporting & Communication

  • Analyze large datasets from monitoring systems, weather forecasts, and historical operations
  • Develop reports, visualizations, and summaries to support decision-making
  • Present technical information clearly to internal stakeholders and leadership

Emergency & Real-Time Operations Support

  • Participate in real-time system operations during weather events, flood conditions, and emergency scenarios
  • Support forecasting updates and operational adjustments outside of standard business hours
  • Contribute to rapid response efforts to ensure system reliability and safety

Collaboration & Continuous Improvement

  • Work collaboratively with engineering teams, operations staff, and external partners
  • Support cross-functional initiatives and continuous improvement efforts
  • Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in water resource management

Technical Skills, Knowledge & Competencies

  • Foundational understanding of water resource management, hydrology, and environmental engineering principles
  • Knowledge of hydrologic and hydraulic modeling, watershed analysis, and fluid mechanics
  • Familiarity with data collection systems, environmental instrumentation, and monitoring equipment
  • Exposure to computer modeling, system configuration, and simulation tools
  • Basic experience with programming or scripting languages (e.g., Python, MATLAB, or similar)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook) for data analysis and reporting
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work in both structured and dynamic environments
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Environmental, Civil, or related field preferred)
  • 0–3 years of experience in water resources, environmental engineering, or a related field
  • Basic understanding of hydrologic modeling, watershed systems, and environmental data analysis
  • Familiarity with engineering software, modeling tools, or data systems preferred
  • Ability to work a hybrid schedule and support after-hours and weekend operations as needed
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and commitment to quality

Work Environment & Schedule

Physical Requirements

Compensation & Benefits

Pay Rate: $30.00-$32.00/hour
