PURPOSE AND ROLE: The Environmental Engineer – Waste / Water is responsible for compliance with federal, state, local, company and refinery regulations, policies and procedures concerning solid waste, hazardous waste, wastewater and storm water programs through permitting, education, training, managing compliance programs and activities, auditing and implementing corrective and improvement measures as required.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide technical assistance and directions to the refinery regarding hazardous/non-hazardous waste, wastewater and storm water management and environmental, federal, state, and local regulatory reporting and recordkeeping requirements.
- Maintain a working relationship with regulatory agencies and other local organizations.
- Participate in the Refinery Emergency Response Team as an advisor.
- Manage implementation of the SWPPP and SPCC plans.
- Develop site solid waste, wastewater and storm water compliance plans and procedures.
- Conduct assessments to track compliance with company Environmental programs and applicable governmental and industry regulations.
- Develop waste, wastewater and storm water training bulletins and promotional activities.
- Lead efforts in creation of waste profiles for the refinery and other facilities
- Coordinate with subcontractors for waste handling and recycling
- Maintain waste inventories and waste shipment manifests.
- Maintain and inspect waste storage areas and spill response equipment.
- Perform routine field inspections of all facilities in the organization.
- Respond to regulatory agencies regarding SWPPP, SPCC, and waste associated with refinery operations.
- Assist the Sr. Environmental Engineer with air compliance activities.
- Must be willing to cross-train with other regulatory programs.
- Must possess a current RCRA Certification for waste management.
- Must have experience working with STEERS program.
- Additional duties as assigned.
EXPERIENCE & SKILLS: Bachelor’s degree in a science based field is required; equivalent related experience considered in lieu of degree. Environmental or Engineering degree preferred.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5-7 years of solid waste, wastewater, or storm water environmental experience with a portion of that experience in the refinery/petrochemical/chemical industry. Air compliance will be a plus.
- Must have excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills to deal with all levels of the organization.
- Good understanding of computers including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Internet functionality.
- High awareness of time management and organizational skills.
- Exhibits flexibility and ability to work in a team environment.
- Additional specialized or technical courses or training may be necessary or helpful.
