Environmental Scientist (Mid-Level – Phase I & II Focus)

Position Overview:
The Environmental Scientist is responsible for supporting environmental due diligence and site assessment projects, with a primary focus on Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) for commercial, industrial, and institutional properties. This role will support day-to-day project execution and technical reporting while ensuring compliance with federal and state environmental regulations.
Responsibilities:
  • Conduct and complete Phase I Environmental Site Assessments in accordance with ASTM E1527-21 standards.
  • Perform Phase II Environmental Sampling and Testing, including soil, groundwater, and vapor sampling using established safety protocols.
  • Prepare detailed, high-quality technical reports and documentation for client deliverables.
  • Evaluate environmental data and interpret findings to identify recognized environmental conditions (RECs) and potential risks.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulations including CERCLA, RCRA, TSCA, ASTM standards, and other federal and state requirements.
  • Coordinate with laboratories, field technicians, and internal teams to ensure project timelines are met.
  • Maintain clear communication with clients regarding project scope, findings, and regulatory considerations.
  • Assist with project scheduling, budgeting, and task management to support overall project efficiency.
  • Communicate with regulatory agencies as needed to address project-specific requirements.
  • Support proposal development and scope preparation for environmental due diligence projects.
  • Review field data and ensure timely submission of reports and client documentation.
  • Identify opportunities for follow-on work through client engagement and project visibility.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Ecology or related field (Master’s degree preferred) preferred
  • Previous experience in environmental research, assessments, and project management preferred
  • Previous experience in an A/E/C firm preferred
  • Proficiency in data analysis, GIS Software and technical report writing preferred
  • Valid Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record (in accordance with our Driver’s License and Motor Vehicle Record Check Criteria), may or may not be required to perform the duties and responsibilities of the role
  • Ability to pass a background check screening
  • Strong communication, stakeholder engagement and collaboration skills
  • Ability to solve problems, manage multiple projects and meet deadlines
  • Knowledge of environmental regulations, best practices and safety procedures
  • Highly organized and able to multitask
  • Self-driven and dynamic in a team environment
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and project management software
  • Ability to read and write, including interpreting documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals, as well as writing routine reports and correspondence and speaking effectively with colleagues, supervisors, and customers/clients
  • Computer skills sufficient to operate a laptop, including sending and receiving emails, and the ability to learn Field Data Collection (FDC)/Inspector Gadget to input data and prepare reports
  • Mathematical skills sufficient to add, subtract, multiply, and divide into all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
  • Reasoning ability to understand and perform instructions in writing, verbal, and diagram form
  • Ability to accurately complete field-testing documentation and detailed figures
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays, overtime, overnight and travel as needed

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • 6–8 years of experience completing Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments.
    • Strong working knowledge of ASTM E1527-21.
    • Designated Environmental Professional (EP) under the All Appropriate Inquiries (AAI) rule.
    • Demonstrated technical writing experience with high-quality report preparation.
    • Experience working on commercial, industrial, and institutional properties.
    • Strong organizational and communication skills.
    • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a deadline-driven environment.
    Travel Requirements:
    • This position requires moderate travel, approximately up to 40% of the time, in support of business objectives and client engagements. Travel may be both scheduled and on short notice, depending on project needs. Destinations typically include job sites, field locations, or regional offices, where work may be conducted in outdoor or operational environments. Adherence to all company safety protocols and use of PPE is required during travel and on-site work.
    Physical Demands & Work Environment:
    • Regularly exposed to outside weather conditions such as precipitation, extreme cold or heat, dusty and noisy work environments.
    • Office work requires long-term sitting and computer work
    • The physical requirements for this position may include and are not limited to: o Ability to lift and/or carry up to 10 lbs. o Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time as well as drive long distances o Frequent use of fingers, hands and arms for typing, cellphone o Ability to bend, twist, reach, stoop, pull, kneel, lift, carry, and push repetitively o Ability to speak and hear effectively to communicate sometimes with noisy environments
