The City of Deltona is seeking a skilled Equipment Operator II to support public works and infrastructure maintenance throughout the City. This position operates a variety of motorized equipment and assists with construction, maintenance, and repair activities including roadway work, drainage maintenance, and right-of-way improvements.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced equipment operator who enjoys working outdoors and contributing to projects that directly improve the community.

Position Overview

The Equipment Operator II performs skilled and semi-skilled work operating equipment used in construction, maintenance, and repair operations across the City. Work may include roadway repairs, drainage maintenance, right-of-way beautification, and stormwater system maintenance.

Employees may also assist work crews with manual labor tasks and support emergency operations when needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Reviews work orders to determine nature of work including excavation, installing concrete, laying of pipe, repair of roadways, and mowing.
  • Operates equipment including hydraulic excavator, backhoes, front-end loader, asphalt patch truck, and lawn maintenance equipment in support of citywide maintenance and construction activities as based on assigned division.
  • Transports required equipment to the job site; assists in the loading and unloading of materials and equipment transported to the work site.
  • Assists other departments in scheduled and emergency operations and all other requested work within safe operation of the equipment.
  • Consults procedural documentation such as vehicle manuals and maintenance manuals to ensure work is performed correctly. Keeps records such as vehicle maintenance and gas receipts to document actions taken.
  • Performs routine minor maintenance of vehicles/equipment; ensures vehicles and equipment are neat, clean and orderly; may be required to perform laboring tasks when not assigned as equipment operator.
  • Traffic Specific: Position is required to work city related special events setting up MOT (Maintenance of Traffic).

Equipment Operated

Employees in this position may operate a variety of equipment used in roadway maintenance, stormwater operations, and public works construction activities. Equipment may include:

  • Backhoes
  • Loaders
  • Bulldozers
  • Skid steers (Bobcat)
  • Dump trucks
  • Forklifts
  • Rollers and tampers
  • Patch trucks and concrete mixers
  • Striping machines and plotters
  • Jackhammers and walk-behind grinders
  • Landscaping and mowing equipment

Experience operating similar heavy equipment used in public works, stormwater maintenance, or construction environments is highly desirable.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent. Requires one (1) year experience in operation of heavy equipment, equipment maintenance or closely related experience.

Required LicensesCertifications

  • Upon appointment must possess and maintain the following license/certificate:
    • State of Florida Class B commercial driver's license with air brakes and tanker endorsement
    • Must possess a valid Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical Card when CDL license is obtained.
  • Must obtain the following license/certificate:
    • Within six (6) months of appointment possess a State of Florida Class A commercial driver's license with air brakes and tanker endorsement.
    • State of Florida Department of Transportation intermediate Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) certification within one (1) year of appointment
  • The position is subject to being "on-call" and working after normal City work hours as well as on weekends and holidays.
  • Must possess/obtain the following division specific license/certificate:

Traffic Division

  • Must possess or be able to obtain IMSA SignsMarkings Level I certification, or be able to obtain within one (1) year of appointment to the position

Stormwater Division

  • Must possess, or be able to obtain Class C Storm Water Certification, Storm Water B Certification within (2) years of appointment to the position.
  • Must possess, or be able to obtain the Erosion Control Certification within one (1) year of appointment to the position.

This position involves outdoor work and physical activity including:

  • Lifting up to 20–50 pounds
  • Walking, standing, bending, and lifting throughout the workday
  • Exposure to machinery, vibration, fumes, and outdoor conditions
  • Occasional on-call work during emergencies or special events
