General Definition of Work
Performs intermediate semiskilled work operating equipment including dump truck, refuse collection truck, salt truck, tanker truck, front end loader, motorized mowers and related equipment, performing minor equipment maintenance and service, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the division supervisor, Assistant Public Works Director and Public Works Director.

Essential Functions
Drives and operates various vehicles and equipment such as dump truck, refuse collection truck, salt truck, tanker truck, front end loader, tractor, etc.
Assists with construction, maintenance and repair of sidewalks, curbs, culverts, man-holes, roads and rights-of-way; installs, maintains and repairs water and sewer lines.
Transports dirt, gravel, mulch, sand, brush and debris to and away from job sites.
Installs and finishes concrete; assists with street maintenance; operates hot mix and cold patch looper in the repair of streets.
Maintains operational safety of vehicles and equipment; performs preventive maintenance on equipment; cleans equipment.
Paints center lines, cross walks, parking lines and lane arrows on public streets and parking lots; paints guard rails; repairs and replaces traffic signs; removes brush from sign line of sight; operates lift truck to trim trees.
Participates in construction, maintenance and repair work when not operating equipment; repairs and reads water meters; flags traffic.
Assists with snow removal and ice control; mixes and spreads salt.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
General knowledge of the practices and techniques of operating and servicing motorized vehicles and equipment; general knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; general knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to proper equipment operation; skill and care in the operation of several types of trucks and construction equipment; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; mechanical aptitude; ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED and minimal experience in the operation of motorized equipment, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Physical Requirements
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working in high, precarious places, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a very loud noise location (e.g. jack hammer work, garbage recycle plant).
Special Requirements
May require possession of or ability to obtain flagging and confined space certifications within six months of employment depending on departmental assignment.
Possession of or ability to acquire an appropriate commercial driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia within six months of employment.

Pay: $33,900.00 - $43,861.00 per year
