ER Nurse Practitioner

The Nurse Practitioner (APRN) initiates the prov1s1on of medical care in the emergency services area in the absence of a physician and collaborates with other professionals and hospital departments to meet the needs of patients. The care given by the APRN is guided by the medical staff delineation of privileges and hospital credentialing processes, hospital policies and procedures, applicable laws and standards, and the scope of the APRN's license.

Position Responsibilities: Provision of Medical Care

  • Examines, diagnoses, and treats illnesses and injuries in the acute care setting.
  • Provides immediate diagnosis and resuscitation care for life-threatening conditions and directs the provision of such care in the pre-hospital setting.
  • Provides diagnosis and care based on medical history, physical examination, and diagnostic tests.
  • Timely initial medical assessment of patient with appropriate triage, as needed.
  • Timely History and Physical examination of patient.
  • Determine appropriate diagnostic work-up and course of medical treatment of patient.
  • Provides supportive care to patients with serious medical and surgical conditions until the care of that patient can be assumed by the appropriate specialist for that condition.
  • Provides definitive or interim care for conditions that while not life-threatening, cause discomfort or risk of worsening to the extent that such care cannot be reasonably delayed until the next available access into a more appropriate source for care.
  • Provides training to medical and nursing personnel in aspects of resuscitations, including identification and treatment of cardiac, traumatic, and infectious emergencies.
  • Works with Nursing Services to ensure optimal training and skill performance by all personnel assigned to the Emergency Services.
  • Timely, appropriate physician contact as needed and/or desired by the physician.
  • Timely, appropriate discharge instructions.
  • Maintain competence in patient treatment.
  • Assess and manage pain and symptoms appropriately.
  • Identify and treat the direct medical care needs for stroke patients.
  • Identify and treat the direct medical care of Trauma Patients.
  • Utilize telemedicine services per policy.
  • Attend at least 50% or more of Trauma case review.

    Position Responsibilities: Department Specific

  • Appropriate disaster management.
  • Comply with EMTALA guidelines.
  • Safely utilize and care for all equipment and supplies in work area.
  • Waived testing in Emergency Department: FAST exam.

Supervisor Relationship:

l. The Physician on call.

  • The Responsible Physician of record with the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts.
  • Designated Responsible Physician in the absence of the Responsible Physician.

Education and Experience:

    • APRN - Graduate of accredited Nurse Practitioner Program.
  • APRN - Licensed with the Kansas State Board of Nursing
  • A college graduate of an AMA/AAPA approved Physician Assistance program.
  • NCCPA certified Physician Assistant.
  • Licensed Physician Assistant with the Kansas State Board of Healing.
