ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography)

Pre-Procedure Responsibilities

• Prepare patient for ERCP: verify identity, consent, NPO status
• Review lab reports (LFT, PT/INR, CBC)
• Check allergies (contrast media, medications)
• Establish IV access and prepare emergency drugs
• Educate patient and relatives about the procedure

Intra-Procedure Responsibilities

• Assist gastroenterologist during ERCP procedures
• Prepare and handle endoscopes, accessories, contrast media
• Monitor vital signs, oxygen saturation, ECG
• Administer medications/sedation as prescribed
• Maintain strict aseptic and radiation safety protocols

Post-Procedure Responsibilities

• Monitor patient for complications such as pancreatitis, bleeding, perforation, infection
• Assess abdominal pain, vomiting, fever, and vitals
• Maintain NPO until gag reflex returns
• Provide post-procedure instructions to patient and family
• Assist in patient transfer and handover

Equipment & Infection Control

• Perform cleaning, disinfection, and storage of endoscopes and ERCP instruments
• Ensure proper functioning of endoscopy equipment
• Follow infection control and biomedical waste policies

Documentation & Coordination

• Maintain accurate procedure notes, nursing records, and checklists
• Coordinate with doctors, anesthesia team, and recovery staff
• Participate in audits, quality improvement, and safety initiatives
