ESOL Instructor – Dual‑Language Workforce Development Program

Location: Providence, Rhode Island Schedule: 25 hours per week Compensation: Competitive, based on experience Reports to: Program Director

Position Overview

The ESOL Instructor will provide high‑quality English language instruction within a dual‑language (English/Haitian Creole or French) workforce development program serving newly arrived Haitian immigrants in Providence, Rhode Island. This role supports adult learners as they build English proficiency, workplace communication skills, and the confidence needed to secure employment and advance toward long‑term stability.

The ideal candidate is culturally responsive, student‑centered, and committed to supporting immigrant communities. Bilingual proficiency in Haitian Creole or French is strongly preferred.

Key Responsibilities

Instruction & Curriculum Delivery

  • Teach ESOL classes using a dual‑language approach that supports English acquisition while valuing learners’ native language.
  • Integrate workplace vocabulary, job‑readiness skills, and industry‑specific language into daily lessons.
  • Develop lesson plans aligned with program goals, adult education standards, and employer expectations.
  • Adapt instruction to multiple proficiency levels, learning styles, and educational backgrounds.
  • Incorporate digital literacy, workplace communication, and real‑world scenarios into instruction.

Student Support & Assessment

  • Conduct intake assessments to determine English proficiency and instructional placement.
  • Monitor student progress through formative and summative assessments.
  • Provide individualized support, tutoring, and feedback to help learners meet language and employment goals.
  • Collaborate with case managers, job coaches, and employment specialists to support student success.

Program Coordination & Collaboration

  • Work closely with workforce development staff to align ESOL instruction with vocational training modules.
  • Participate in team meetings, professional development, and curriculum planning sessions.
  • Maintain accurate attendance, progress notes, and required documentation.
  • Support a welcoming, trauma‑informed, culturally affirming learning environment.

Qualifications

Required

  • Experience teaching ESOL/ELL to adults or older youth.
  • Strong understanding of adult learning principles and culturally responsive instruction.
  • Ability to differentiate instruction for diverse learners.
  • Strong communication, organization, and classroom‑management skills.

Preferred

  • Bilingual in Haitian Creole or French.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, TESOL, Applied Linguistics, or related field.
  • TESOL/TEFL certification or equivalent training.
  • Experience working with immigrant, refugee, or multilingual communities.
  • Familiarity with workforce development or job‑training programs.

Work Environment

  • Classes held in Providence, RI at a community‑based training site.
  • Some evening or weekend hours may be required based on student needs.
  • Collaborative, mission‑driven environment serving newly arrived Haitian immigrants.
