We are seeking a detail-oriented Estimator with a strong engineering background to support cost estimation for metal fabrication, machining, and structural components. The role involves interpreting customer drawings, calculating dimensions and weights, selecting appropriate materials, and preparing accurate cost estimates for manufacturing and fabrication projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and interpret customer-provided drawings (2D/3D) including fabrication, machining, and structural drawings
- Calculate component dimensions, volumes, and accurate weights based on drawings and material specifications
- Prepare detailed cost estimates covering materials, fabrication, machining, welding, finishing, and outsourced processes
- Select appropriate materials based on mechanical requirements, standards, and application (carbon steel, stainless steel, alloys, etc.)
- Understand and evaluate structural design aspects, including load paths, thickness requirements, and fabrication feasibility
- Coordinate with engineering, production, and procurement teams to validate assumptions and costs
- Analyze BOMs (Bill of Materials) and verify quantities and specifications
- Identify cost-saving opportunities without compromising quality or design intent
- Maintain estimation records and pricing databases for reference and future projects
- Support tender submissions, quotations, and technical clarifications with customers
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related field
- Strong ability to read and interpret engineering and structural drawings
- Excellent knowledge of materials, including steel grades, alloys, and fabrication practices
- Solid understanding of structural components, welding, and fabrication methods
- Proficiency in calculating weights, areas, volumes, and material take-offs
- Familiarity with manufacturing processes such as machining, welding, fabrication, and surface treatment
- Good working knowledge of CAD drawings (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar – viewing and interpretation)
- High attention to detail and strong analytical skills
- Ability to work under deadlines and manage multiple estimates simultaneously
Preferred Experience
- Experience in heavy fabrication, oil & gas, mining, or industrial manufacturing environments
- Prior experience in estimation or costing roles within engineering or fabrication companies
- Knowledge of international standards (ASTM, ASME, EN, etc.) is an advantage
