Position Title: Evening Custodian & Floor Technician
Department: Facilities
Reports to: Custodial Supervisor
Pay Class: Full-time Regular
FLSA Status: Hourly, Non-Exempt

Position Summary
Evening Custodian & Floor Technicians are skilled professionals dedicated to maintaining the integrity, safety, and appearance of flooring throughout the Science Center while supporting general custodial operations. This role combines technical expertise with precision and physical stamina to deliver exceptional results in high-traffic, public-facing spaces. Specialists operate advanced floor care equipment, including ride-on scrubbers, buffers, and robotic systems and apply specialized techniques such as waxing and buffing to preserve surfaces and enhance guest experience. In addition to floor care, this position performs routine custodial tasks such as cleaning restrooms, emptying trash, and ensuring a clean and welcoming environment. Candidates should be eager to learn, committed to mastering specialized skills through hands-on training, and passionate about contributing to a safe, visually appealing facility. By maintaining both floors and overall cleanliness, this position plays a critical role in supporting the Science Center’s mission and operational excellence. This position is eligible for the evening shift premium of $1.00

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Floor Care (Approx. 60%)
  • Operate heavy-duty floor care equipment, including ride-on scrubbers, buffers, and extractors after provided training.
  • Perform specialized floor maintenance under supervision initially, progressing to independent work as skills develop such as stripping, waxing, and buffing to maintain high standards of appearance and safety.
  • Conduct scheduled floor care projects in exhibit halls, theaters, and back-of-house areas.
  • Inspect and maintain floor care equipment, performing minor troubleshooting and reporting major repairs.
  • Handle cleaning chemicals safely and in accordance with established protocols.
  • Assist with large-scale cleaning projects and seasonal deep cleans.
  • Maintain accurate records of floor care activities and equipment maintenance.
  • Collaborate with custodial team to ensure seamless operations and prioritize floor safety.
  • Program, start, and shut down robotic vacuum equipment, including training team members on proper operation and maintenance.
General Custodial Duties (Approx. 40%)
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms, break rooms, and other public areas.
  • Empty trash and recycling receptacles throughout the facility.
  • Assist with exhibit resets, theater cleaning, and event support.
  • Handle cleaning chemicals safely and in accordance with established protocols.
  • Collaborate with custodial team to ensure seamless operations and respond to urgent cleaning needs.
  • Assist with large-scale cleaning projects and seasonal deep cleans.
Position Requirements:
  • Willingness to learn and master specialized floor care techniques through on-the-job training.
  • Ability to operate heavy-duty floor care equipment (ride-on scrubbers, buffers, burnishers).
  • Understanding of chemical safety and compliance with SDS guidelines.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills for equipment maintenance.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks for large-scale floor projects.
  • Physical strength and endurance for lifting up to 75 lbs. and prolonged machine operation.
  • Flexibility to work varied shifts, including nights and weekends, for scheduled floor care projects.
Qualifications

Required:
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in specialized floor care (stripping, buffing).
  • Proven ability to operate heavy-duty floor care equipment (ride-on scrubbers, buffers, burnishers).
  • Strong understanding of chemical safety and compliance with SDS guidelines.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and tolerate vibration and noise from equipment.
Preferred:
  • Certification or formal training in floor care techniques.
  • Experience in large-scale facilities or high-traffic environments.
  • Basic mechanical skills for equipment maintenance and minor repairs.
Physical Demands & Working Conditions
  • Frequent climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching during floor care projects.
  • Ability to push, pull, lift, and carry up to 75 lbs. regularly.
  • Prolonged operation of heavy-duty floor machines requiring repetitive motion and grip strength.
  • Ability to visually inspect floors for quality and safety compliance.
  • Heavy work – exerting up to 75 lbs. of force occasionally and up to 50 lbs. frequently.
  • Work performed indoors with occasional outdoor exposure.
  • Subject to noise and vibration from ride-on and walk-behind equipment.
  • Exposure to chemical fumes and wet surfaces during waxing.
  • Must wear PPE including gloves, goggles, and non-slip footwear.

Compensation
Pay is based on several factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and years of experience.
Starting Base Salary Range: $23.50 - $24.50​
In addition to base salary, regular employees working 40 hrs/week can expect the following benefits:
