Position Summary


The Executive Vice President, Public Policy & Professional Relations (EVP) is responsible for enhancing NCPDP’s engagement and relationships among professional pharmacy and related healthcare organizations, government, and the healthcare industry in general. Through this engagement and by “connecting the dots” the EVP will provide NCPDP and its members with industry intelligence needed to ensure NCPDP remains relevant and continues to command a prominent role in a changing healthcare system.

The EVP will be the primary staff member responsible for representing NCPDP at professional pharmacy and healthcare organizations and venues not specifically dedicated to standards development alone. The EVP will be responsible for increasing industry awareness of NCPDP through execution of activities that complement NCPDP’s Strategic Plan and support NCPDP’s goals and objectives with professional organizations and government agencies. The EVP will work closely with NCPDP executive team to achieve the goals of NCPDP.

Strong emphasis is placed on the core principles of “Relationship Marketing,” focusing on projecting credibility, expertise, and trust to increase NCPDP’s visibility and influence among leaders across professional, government, and industry circles.

Major Responsibilities

  • Oversee the establishment and execution of NCPDP’s Government and Professional Relations activities to include the targeting of specific organizations or audiences, communication goals and objectives, communication channels for each specific audience, potential messages, materials, and activities, etc.
  • In conjunction with marketing communications, execute those parts of NCPDP’s Government, and Professional Relations activities requiring executive level meetings, speaking engagements, press releases, etc. that drive broad industry awareness and demand for NCPDP products and services.
  • Identify key organizations, conferences, venues, or individuals wherein NCPDP should seek relevant organizational exposure and potential opportunities for collaboration (to include but not limited to NCPDP’s National Association Tours and NCPDP’s EDvocacy Tours).
  • Participate in executive staff strategic planning meetings and decision making as deemed necessary.
  • Serve as primary contact for professional healthcare practice organizations and for issues related to clinical practice both nationally and internationally.
  • Serve as primary contact and responsible for the overall direction and management of the Government Affairs activities and personnel (including Congressional Consultant).
  • Proven ability to serve on boards, task forces, working groups, or advisory panels of relevant external organizations as a means of widening NCPDP’s footprint, maintaining meaningful engagement and identifying marketplace trends.

Other Responsibilities

  • Identify, prioritize, and arrange meetings with key members and non-member government, professional and industry executives as a means of demonstrating the value of NCPDP. Also learn how they perceive NCPDP and determine opportunities for collaboration and/or improved relations.
  • Maintain membership in multiple National organizations as a means of gaining access to valuable information, identifying trends, and streamlining organizational engagement and meeting attendance. Including the understanding of potential international organizations that may complement NCPDP’s strategic initiatives.
  • Participate as senior staff on the Strategic Planning Committee and other relevant internal committees as appropriate.
  • In collaboration with NCPDP’s executive team, develop relationships with key associations and develop strategic alliances as appropriate.

Organizational Responsibilities

The President & CEO of NCPDP may be required, during peak periods or when staff resources are insufficient, to redirect staff to share duties and responsibilities of others.

NCPDP Experience

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of NCPDP and its importance for a minimum of three (3) years. Five (5) years as an NCPDP member.
  • Previous broad experience within the healthcare sector is recommended.
  • Requires on-going interface with staff and members.
  • Exhibits a pro-NCPDP attitude/demeanor.
  • Creates an open environment where others feel free to share their point of view.
  • Follows through on commitments.
  • Possesses enthusiasm for the goals of the organization/inspires the same in others.
  • Demonstrates NCPDP communication content development skills.
  • Demonstrate ability to lead and gain consensus amongst all NCPDP communication groups (member services/communications, general internal communications, and marketing communications) due to NCPDP knowledge.

Pharmacy and Healthcare Industry Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in pharmacy required; advanced degree (e.g., MA, MS, MPH, MBA, or PharmD) or commensurate practice leadership experience is a plus due to extensive interaction with senior level staff at member organizations.
  • Current licensure in good standing to practice Pharmacy in one or more States a requirement.
  • Participate in ACPE-accredited Continuing Education as a means of maintaining professional knowledge and skills and as a requirement for licensure.
  • 5+ years of pharmacy and healthcare industry experience at the senior executive level. Comfortable speaking with senior executive level people in organizations.
  • Thorough understanding of current industry issues.
  • Experience in interacting (on a Professional/Peer level) with pharmacists and other members of the healthcare team (e.g., Physicians, Nurses, and Dentists).
  • Familiarity with clinical practice, business and technical healthcare issues and trends.
  • Pharmacy practice experience in various practice settings a plus (e.g., Health System Pharmacy, Community Pharmacy, Association Management, Pharmaceutical Manufacturing, Managed Care Pharmacy, Pharmacy Education, Pharmaceutical Research, etc.)

Functional Area Experience

  • Experience in translating complex analytical concepts or information for an uninformed audience and presenting results at executive levels.
  • Experience serving on a Board of Directors.
  • Experience serving as a member of a Professional Pharmacy Association.
  • Experience in strategic planning outside NCPDP is a plus.
  • Demonstrated poise and polish that creates a sense of credibility in all communications and interactions and enables one to serve as an internal and external representative of the organization.

Leadership Experience and Other Skills

  • Demonstrated strong leadership and executive influence skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communications skills.
  • Must possess the ability to master volumes of material or regulations readily, with attention to detail.
  • Ability to express complex issues in a clear, concise, and persuasive manner.
  • Must be highly people-oriented and able to manage multiple concurrent projects and tasks.
  • Requires self-starter who can work independently or with a team and possesses a “can do” attitude.
  • Project management, administrative, and good follow-up skills are required.
  • Writing and computer skills are a necessity. Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access™ or other database applications and platforms is a plus.
  • Demonstrated experience in industry conferences or public speaking is required.
  • Proficiency in communications/strategic planning/strategic thinking.


The position is full-time. Due to the requirements of the job and the interaction with other executive staff, the position may require a portion of the time to be in the Scottsdale, AZ office to interact with other staff. The position requires heavy travel fifty (50) percent or higher at times to visit government and member companies, fulfill speaking engagements, and attend meetings and conferences. Due to heavy travel, meetings may be held remotely or in person. The position is not required to reside in AZ.
