Experience Family Law Paralegal

The Figueroa Law Group, P.A., in Melbourne, Florida, is looking to hire a full-time experienced family law paralegal to join our growing team. The ideal candidate must have at least 5 years of law firm experience and a minimum of 4 years of experience in the area of Florida Family Law and knowledge of Brevard County Court procedures. This position includes a significant amount of client contact requiring a positive attitude, compassion, and excellent communication skills both in person and in written communications. In addition, this position requires the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with the legal team. The candidate must possess skills to handle a significant caseload, time management skills, and attention to detail.

Position Summary:

Paralegals assist and provide a range of legal support and administration to lawyers and other legal professionals engaged in family law. This includes drafting legal documents, preparing financial affidavits, knowledge of Excel, and familiarity with the local rules of procedure for family law.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Perform legal and factual research; perform records research
  • Bill a minimum of 30 hours per week
  • Manage a minimum caseload of at least 15 cases
  • Organize and analyze information; cross-check and validate information including checking BECA.
  • Prepare reports as assigned, update the client’s electronic file and draft legal documents including pleadings, correspondence and financial affidavits. Additionally, be able to learn to do equitable distribution worksheets. Familiarity with Family Law Software is a plus.
  • Help to prepare legal arguments with the attorney and organize case law, motions, memorandum of law as dictated by the attorneys, and proposed orders. Familiarity with the discovery deadlines and meeting deadlines is critical.
  • Check legal forms and documents for accuracy
  • Maintain reference files; organize and track case files
  • Coordinate law office activities such as subpoena deliveries
  • Locate and communicate with witnesses; interact with clients
  • Assist the lawyers in the courtroom with evidence exhibits and note taking.
  • Trial preparation including but not limited to organizing and bate stamping evidence and preparation of the trial notebook as instructed by the attorneys.
  • E-file court documents
  • Schedule and set depositions, hearings through JACS, mediation conferences, and scheduling the preparation for these proceedings.
  • Contact Judicial Assistants, opposing counsels, process servers, and mediators
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Skills:

  • High school diploma required, a college degree is a plus
  • 4 or more years of experience in family law
  • 3-5 years of law firm experience
  • 3-5 years of litigation experience
  • Knowledge and experience in discovery disclosures
  • Knowledge and experience in working with clients
  • Excellent typing skills and proofreading skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of legal principles, the Family Law Rules of Procedure and relevant legal terminology.
  • Excellent legal drafting, writing, and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, analytical, and critical thinking skills
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook and Adobe
  • Ability to operate basic office equipment such as a copy machine, printer, scanner, computer
  • Ability to work with databases and on-line technological platforms
  • Ability to be detail-oriented, diligent, and flexible
  • Ability to handle conflicting time demands and focus on task completion with little direction or need for supervisory follow-up
  • Proficient command of the English language in both oral and written format
  • Ability to work and maintain patience with diversified individuals of various ethnic backgrounds and professional competencies
  • Ability to work as a team member with legal assistants and other office personnel.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in a professional manner is critical
  • Equivalent combination of education and/or experience considered

Pay is commensurate with experience

Pay: $24.00 - $30.00 per hour
