Experienced Fleet Leader

Job Description:
We are looking for passionate individuals to join our team as a Fleet Leader. The position will be responsible for building positive relationships and actively coaching a group of drivers while managing specific business key metrics. This includes achieving maximum fleet productivity and profitability by reaching weekly utilization goals and monitoring operating revenue and cost. Fleet Leaders are accountable for insuring safe standards of operation are practiced while meeting all customer pickup and delivery requirements.

As a Fleet Leader, you are required to use an open, interactive coaching/mentoring approach to create driver success and retain our driving professionals. Responsibilities Include:
  • Ensure driver success through relationship building, effective communication, positive recognition and timely addressing of issues (personal and performance related).
  • Provide load planners with accurate information on truck availability.
  • Review and manage fleet performance. Factors to consider: Driver home time must be within expectations for their assigned fleet; Eliminate unscheduled mid-week home time; Drivers must make on-time deliveries with available hours and within safety standards.
  • Provide complete load information, including routing and directions to ensure drivers are fully prepared for work assignment.
  • Assist/coach drivers on time management issues, i.e., departure times, hours of service management to insure on-time delivery, logging and off-duty/work activity that will result in adequate rest time. This should include but is not limited to: Notifying Customer Service & Load Planners on delivery status; Verify projected time of arrival and appointments; Track and verify extra picks/stops; Track and communicate all exceptions; Verify/review available hours; Take proactive steps aimed at the prevention of service failures; Analyze service failures and address problem issues.
  • Hold drivers accountable for quality performance; address non-performance or substandard issues timely and effectively.
  • Complete driver follow-up reviews for new hires after 2 weeks, 6 weeks and 90 days to assure meeting driver expectations for home time and miles as dictated by the expectation sheet completed at hire. Also, determine if the driver meets all company performance standards.
  • Give developmental feedback to drivers regarding their performance and conduct regular discussions with all drivers to review their performance against the key performance metrics.
  • Recognize positive performance.
  • Manage drivers in compliance with Company policies and procedures.
  • Approve and track driver time off and driver availability.
  • Accurately enter and track all driver events in the McLeod system.
  • Issue PO’s for lumpers, tolls, road expenses and check the accuracy of extra pays (unload, detention, layover and breakdowns) in a timely manner and issue Comchecks as needed.
  • Monitor driver pay weekly to insure a fair allocation of miles among assigned drivers and that weekly expectations (as conveyed by the Company) are met.
  • Listen and communicate effectively with other non-driving staff; function as a liaison between the driver and other departments to facilitate problem resolution.
  • Work a flexible schedule in accordance with the needs of drivers and other demands of the position.
  • Responsible for Driver Retention. Retain quality driving professionals.

Job Requirements:
Qualifications & Competencies:
  • 2+ years of experience in transportation and/or management preferred, but not required
  • Deliver key factor results for Utilization, Retention, Safety and Service.
  • Excellent “one-on-one” communications skills necessary to disseminate information to drivers to develop a successful business relationship with drivers, customers, etc.
  • Demonstrate well-developed listening skills.
  • Responsible for effectively managing 40+ drivers’ schedules.
  • Manage key performance metrics and meet or exceed expectations for fleet utilization, MPG and safety.
  • Ability to operate phone, fax, voicemail and satellite communications systems.
  • Computer knowledge and data entry skills necessary to effectively complete job duties.
  • Geographical knowledge required in order to determine Projected Time of Arrivals for deliveries.
  • Ability to maintain composure and react professionally during periods of stress with somewhat limited information periodically.
  • Demonstrate the ability to anticipate and evaluate problems and situations and draw logical conclusions and implement practical solutions.
  • Demonstrate effective planning, organizing and multi-tasking skills.
