Experienced WordPress Developer (Contract)

We're seeking a contract front-end developer with a focus on WordPress to assist our Development team with a large project and become a trusted resource for Monkee-Boy development overflow.



Applicants should be able to independently handle the development of a website from start to finish in WordPress. This position involves working closely with both the Design team and other developers. Projects range from individually managed WordPress sites to collaborative efforts with the whole development team on larger, customized projects. You may also assist in the maintenance/post-launch support of various projects.



This is a contract/hourly position.
The selected candidate will not be considered an employee or part-time employee of Monkee-Boy. The ideal candidate would work in the EST or CST time zones.

Job Requirements

This role is for someone with extensive front-end skills and knowledge around WordPress.

  • First and most important: passionate about learning new technologies and collaborating with a team.
  • 4+ years of experience with HTML, CSS, JavaScript and responsive design. This should include being comfortable with flexbox and CSS Grid.
  • At least 2 years of experience working for an agency on client projects.
  • Fluent with the WordPress admin interface, formatting content, handling menus, and managing custom post types.
  • Experience with WordPress custom theme creation, custom post types, and debugging plugins. Our themes are created custom and we don't rely on plugins unless needed.
  • Ability to debug compatibility issues across browsers and devices; Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge, iOS, Android.
  • Comfortable working with:
    • Figma and general image manipulation/formatting (as needed) to successfully build out approved design(s).
    • Our code is on GitHub.
    • API's like Google Maps, Twitter, MailChimp, Constant Contact, etc.
    • General WordPress Plugins like:
      • Advanced Custom Fields Pro (ACF Pro) - we do not use Beaver Builder, Visual Composer, etc.
      • Gravity Forms
      • The Events Calendar
      • SEO Framework
    • Slack - this is how we communicate most of the time. We can always jump into a huddle or hang out when needed.
  • General understanding of performance when it comes to your code, plugins, and WordPress. We typically guarantee 90+ PageSpeed Insights scores for Accessibility, Best Practices & SEO and "Pass" all Core Web Vitals. You'll need to be aware of these as you build, test & optimize.
  • Ability to debug code-related issues and familiar with digging into error logs.
  • Excellent organization skills with the ability to manage and bounce between multiple projects in a day.
  • Excellent communication skills in written, verbal, and documentation. You will be communicating directly with clients, most of the time through our ticketing system.

Each of the below will get you a +1 with us. You don't need to be an expert, but you should bring the urge to learn. This should also give you a little more insight into what our development environment looks like and what will be asked of you as the position grows.

  • Website Optimization - Experience optimizing performance when it comes to your own code and getting every millisecond out of page load.
  • Web Accessibility / WCAG - Experience with web accessibility, including ARIA roles, hover effects, interactions, alternatives, and color contrast. We aim for WCAG 2.1 Level AA. This is under bonus, but understanding why accessibility is essential is required. We can work together on making a project accessible.
  • Experience participating in code reviews.

About Our Dev Team

This application process is not a one-way street. We want you to have a good understanding of our development environment and the tools we use. It’s essential not only for you to be a good fit for us but also that we are a good fit for you. We won’t take it personally if you pass on us.   • The majority of our sites are hosted with WP Engine. We deploy from GitHub to WP Engine using a GitHub Action.
  • Excluding some in-house projects, we only work with PHP and WordPress.
  • We use Local from WP Engine for local development, but that isn’t required.
  • We use gulp as our task runner to process CSS, JS, and optimize images.
  • We do NOT use any CSS frameworks. PostCSS can be used if needed.
  • Our dev team can use whatever code editor, OS, apps, etc, they wish. You know what you are comfortable with and should be able to support your setup.
