Fabricator/welder

POSITION OVERVIEW
Position: Shop Fabricator / Welder
Location: Annapolis, MD (Shop-based; some field work may be required)
We are looking for a skilled, detail-oriented Shop Fabricator/Welder to join our production team. The right candidate will have hands-on experience with structural steel and metal fabrication, strong welding skills across multiple processes, and the ability to read and work from engineered drawings and welding symbols. This is an opportunity to work alongside experienced tradespeople in a well-equipped shop environment, contributing to projects that matter.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Fabricate structural steel assemblies, weldments, and custom metal components from engineered drawings, shop drawings, and work orders.
  • Perform welding using multiple processes including SMAW (Stick), GMAW (MIG), FCAW (Flux Core), and GTAW (TIG) on carbon steel, stainless steel, and other metals as required.
  • Read and interpret engineered blueprints, fabrication drawings, welding symbols, and dimensional tolerances to ensure parts meet specifications.
  • Set up, operate, and maintain fabrication equipment including welders, grinders, cutting torches, plasma cutters, press brakes, and layout tools.
  • Perform precision layout work, marking, cutting, fitting, and assembly of steel components prior to welding.
  • Inspect completed welds and fabrications for dimensional accuracy, quality, and conformance to project requirements.
  • Operate overhead cranes, forklifts, and material handling equipment to move and position steel members safely (training provided if needed).
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in compliance with OSHA and company safety standards.
  • Collaborate with shop foreman, engineers, and fellow fabricators to meet production schedules and project deadlines.
  • Identify and communicate material deficiencies, drawing discrepancies, or quality issues to the foreman promptly.
  • Participate in shop meetings, safety training, and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Assist with occasional field work or on-site repair and installation as projects require.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum 3–5 years of hands-on structural steel fabrication and welding experience in a shop or industrial environment.
  • Knowledge in at one of the welding processes: SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, or GTAW.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret engineered drawings, blueprints, and welding symbols.
  • Working knowledge of metal fitting, layout, and structural assembly techniques.
  • Ability to produce quality welds meeting D1.1 (Structural Steel) or similar AWS standards.
  • Comfortable using hand tools, power tools, and shop machinery safely and effectively.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality craftsmanship.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced shop environment.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs., stand for extended periods, and work in varying shop conditions.
