JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Facilities and Grounds Specialist plays a vital role in ensuring that our campus remains safe, functional, and visually inviting for students, staff, and visitors. This position focuses on maintaining the physical appearance of outdoor spaces—including lawns, gardens, walkways, and common areas—while also supporting event setup and takedown, seasonal tasks, and light maintenance. With an eye for detail and pride in stewardship, the Facilities and Grounds Specialist helps create an environment that reflects our community’s values, enhances daily experiences, and provides a welcoming first impression to all who enter our campus.

Reports to: Custodial and Maintenance Supervisor

The wage range for this position is $21.50 - $23.00 per hour depending on experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Campus Appearance and Upkeep

  • Maintain lawns, trees, shrubs, and flower beds through mowing, trimming, watering, fertilizing, and seasonal planting.
  • Regularly remove weeds, debris, and litter to ensure a clean and welcoming campus environment.
  • Ensure outdoor spaces (entrances, walkways, courtyards, athletic fields, and parking areas) are clean, safe, and visually attractive.
  • Perform seasonal tasks such as snow removal, leaf collection, and holiday decoration installation.
  • Power wash sidewalks, building exteriors, and outdoor furniture as needed.
  • Maintain signage, benches, fences, and other exterior fixtures in good condition.

Custodial

  • Performs basic cleaning, sanitation, and minor maintenance of the building including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, polishing, trash removal, according to team schedule.
  • Provides feedback and suggestions to Custodian Supervisor regarding procedures for all buildings staff to maintain a cleaner, healthier, safer, and more efficient environment in which to work and learn.
  • Completes the specialty cleaning schedule over summer and other school-break periods for heavy cleaning such as stripping/refinishing, carpet cleaning, etc.

Event Support

  • Assist with moving furniture, staging, and equipment for school events, assemblies, athletic events, musical performances, and community functions.

General Maintenance

  • Complete minor repairs such as fixing door hardware, replacing ceiling tiles, patching walls, or adjusting furniture to ensure safety and functionality.
  • Replace light bulbs, ballasts, and fixtures to ensure proper lighting across campus.
  • Address minor plumbing issues (e.g., unclogging drains, replacing faucets, repairing toilets).
  • Assist with basic electrical troubleshooting, such as resetting breakers or replacing switches/outlets.
  • Report larger system issues to the Facilities Supervisor.

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Strong familiarity with custodial equipment and custodial/security procedures.
  • Team player.
  • Hardware, plumbing, and electric maintenance skills.
  • Dedication to providing a clean, healthy, and safe facility with an eye for detail.
  • Strong work ethic.
  • Customer service - Respond to staff requests related to outdoor facilities and event support in a timely, service-oriented manner.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of two years of experience in a similar position.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to lift, carry push or pull objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to withstand long periods of standing and walking.
  • Comfortable with climbing ladders, climbing and moving in confined spaces.
  • Must be able to respond promptly to alarms and facility related emergencies.
  • Comfortable withstanding exposure to dust, fumes, odors, gases, and cleaning chemicals.
  • Accepts and will handle bodily fluids during waste disposal and other routine activities.
