JOB SUMMARY:
The Facilities & Grounds Technician supports the Town of Awendaw by maintaining Town-owned buildings, parks, grounds, trails, recreational areas, and public facilities. This position plays a key role in ensuring that Awendaw’s public spaces remain clean, safe, functional, and welcoming for residents, visitors, and community partners. Work includes landscaping, custodial duties, routine maintenance, minor repairs, and operational support for Town facilities and events. This position reports to the Town Administrator.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Facilities Maintenance:
1. Perform routine inspections of Town buildings and facilities to identify maintenance needs and safety concerns.
2. Complete minor carpentry, painting, plumbing, and electrical repairs as assigned.
3. Conduct preventative maintenance on building systems such as HVAC units, lighting, doors, and small equipment.
4. Assist with upgrades, repairs, and small-scale renovation projects.
Grounds & Landscaping:
- Maintain all Town-owned grounds, including parks, rights-of-way, recreational areas, and landscaped properties.
- Oversee landscape contractor to perform the following: Mow, trim, edge, and clear brush along Town property lines and community-use areas, plant, prune, mulch, and care for trees, shrubs, and seasonal flowers. Potentially, it could be completed in-house, depending on the council's discretion.
- Inspect and maintain irrigation systems across Town properties.
- Remove trash, debris, storm damage, and fallen limbs from public spaces.
- Support upkeep of playgrounds, athletic areas, and trailheads.
Equipment Operation & Maintenance:
- Operate mowers, tractors, trailers, utility vehicles, trimmers, blowers, chainsaws, and hand tools safely and efficiently.
- Perform basic maintenance and repairs on equipment and tools.
- Conduct and document pre-use inspections on Town vehicles and machinery.
Public Works & Community Support:
- Set up and break down equipment for events, festivals, and community programs.
- Assist with storm preparation and post-storm recovery efforts, including debris removal and facility assessments.
- Respond to facility maintenance calls, including occasional after‑hours needs.
- Support other Town departments with special projects and seasonal workload needs.
Additional Duties:
1. Assist with special projects as assigned; and
2. Perform other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of building maintenance, groundskeeping, landscaping, and custodial practices.
- Ability to operate a variety of hand tools, power tools, and groundskeeping equipment safely.
- Ability to identify and troubleshoot basic building and equipment issues.
- Strong time management, organizational, and independent work skills.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and maintain accurate maintenance logs.
- Good teamwork and communication skills when working with staff, contractors, and the public.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid South Carolina driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- At least one year of experience in facilities maintenance, landscaping, groundskeeping, or related field; equivalent combinations of experience and training will be considered.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in municipal, parks, or public sector environments.
- Trade certifications (HVAC, pesticide/herbicide applicator, equipment operation, irrigation maintenance, etc.).
- Experience in landscape planning, athletic field maintenance, or trail/park maintenance.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, reach, and operate equipment for extended periods.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
Work Environment
- Work is performed in indoor facilities, outdoors in Town parks and grounds, and within Town Hall.
- Exposure to weather conditions, noise, dust, chemicals, and equipment vibrations should be expected.
