Facilities Laborer

This position has an expected start date of July 1, 2026.

Summary

The Facilities Laborer performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance, landscaping, and custodial tasks in support of the Town’s parks, recreational areas, and community facilities. This position assists in maintaining all Oakland facilities, including Broadford Park, Glades Park, the Mountain Fresh Pavilion, and the Oakland Community Center to ensure that facilities are safe, clean, and functional for daily use and public events.

The Laborer works under the direct supervision of the Supervisor of Facilities and may receive assignments from the Director of General Services or other department staff as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform grounds maintenance including mowing, trimming, leaf removal, and litter collection.
  • Maintain restrooms, pavilions, playgrounds, trails, and other park amenities in clean and safe condition.
  • Assist in facility repairs such as painting, carpentry, plumbing, or basic electrical tasks.
  • Support event setup and cleanup at Town facilities, including moving tables, chairs, and equipment.
  • Perform snow and ice removal from sidewalks, parking areas, and access routes.
  • Operate and maintain small tools and power equipment including mowers, trimmers, and blowers.
  • Report maintenance needs, safety issues, and equipment malfunctions to the Supervisor of Facilities.
  • Assist with locking and unlocking facilities according to assigned schedules.
  • Maintain supply and equipment storage areas in an organized manner.
  • Follow Town safety procedures and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Interact courteously with the public and represent the Town of Oakland in a professional manner.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • One (1) year of experience in building, grounds, or park maintenance preferred.
  • Ability to safely operate landscaping and maintenance equipment.
  • Knowledge of basic maintenance and repair methods.
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods and in varying weather conditions.
  • Dependable, self-motivated, and able to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Must possess or obtain within six months a valid Maryland driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.

Working Conditions

  • Primarily outdoor work with exposure to weather, noise, and equipment.
  • Requires frequent standing, bending, lifting up to 50 pounds, and operating machinery.
  • Occasional evening, weekend, and holiday work required for events or maintenance needs.

Pay: From $19.60 per hour
