Facility Infrastructure / Electrician

This position requires the incumbent to work a flexible work schedule that may include weekends and evening hours but will consist of five days with the incumbent working eight hours a day. This position may require the incumbent to respond to emergencies beyond the normal work day.

Essential Function: (The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed.   • Perform corrective maintenance on new and renovated installations, coordinating across trades to ensure quality and timely repairs.
  • Develop and implement preventative maintenance programs for all existing electrical systems, including routine inspections and servicing.
  • Plan, design, install, and repair wiring, fixtures, safety control equipment, and all associated electrical components.
  • Replace electrical equipment as needed, including motors, ballasts, pumps, fixtures, receptacle switches, power control centers (PCCs), and motor control centers (MCCs).
  • Maintain and troubleshoot variable frequency drives (VFDs) and motors to ensure operational efficiency.
  • Maintain and service all fire protection systems, including smoke detectors, heat detectors, pull stations, addressable panels, and related equipment.
  • Coordinate inspections and system servicing with the City of New Bedford and contracted service providers.
  • Establish and manage an inventory of spare equipment and essential maintenance supplies.
  • Troubleshoot and repair electronic access control systems for doors and main control panels.
  • Report critical maintenance issues to the Facility Director and recommend whether repairs should be handled in-house or by external contractors.
  • Assist with coordination and oversight of contractor work and ensure compliance with project timelines and standards.
  • Respond to emergency maintenance requests, including during nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Recommended Minimum Qualification

Education, Training and Experience:High School Graduate or GED. At least five years of related experience and as a licensed electrician performing electrical, fire alarm and security system work. Must maintain a journeyman Massachusetts Electrical License and valid driver’s license. Proficient with electrical circuits, transformers, fuses, motors, relays, magnetic starters, switches, grounds, shorts, faults and test equipment.

Knowledge, Ability and Skill:

Knowledge: Thorough understanding of electrical systems and maintenance best practices, and procedures. Thorough understanding of local, state, and federal electrical codes, ordinances, and regulations. Basic understanding of building design, construction, and maintenance as needed to maintain or ensure maintenance of equipment, buildings, and other parts of the organization’s facilities. Strong skills in computer integration, work order systems and networking.

Ability: Ability to prioritize and delegate multiple tasks and projects to ensure each is completed correctly and in a timely manner. Ability to plan, organize and collaborate with others. Ability to communicate effectively, ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all school employees, students, teachers, parents, and vendors, ability to recognize school-wide priorities and work cooperatively to support their accomplishment, ability to prioritize multiple tasks and deal effectively with interruptions, occasionally under time pressure. Ability to operate a computer and proficient in the use of MS Office, Google Suite and database applications. Ability to learn the current Building Management System, PA System and other electronic or communication maintenance related tasks.

Skills: Strong written and communication skills. Excellent interpersonal skills. Self-started. Willing and able to perform assigned duties in a manner that is sensitive to different personalities, respectful of the role and authority of school leaders, sensitive to community dynamics.

This position is frequently required to sit, communicate, or hear; occasionally required to walk, must be able to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move objects weighing up to 20 pounds. Vision and hearing at or correctable to normal ranges. This position requires the ability to operate a keyboard and calculator at efficient speed.
