Howard County Recreation and Parks operates several historical rental facilities in Howard County. This position performs intermediate level recreation services work ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the historic facility and park property during evening/weekend events. This position will assist in providing customer service and support for rental and special events. Events may include weddings, parties, retreats, meetings, programs and a variety of other social occasions. The position assists in the coordination of rental events with other staff, assist and guide event vendors and caterers, provide good customer service to rental clients; ensure that all historic site rules & regulations are followed; troubleshoot issues with vendors and guests; coordinate and help solve any maintenance issues during the course of events; assist with parking, work closely with park staff, assist event vendors and partners to ensure that event logistics are addressed successfully.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties include but are not limited to the following:


  • Staff historic facility or park during events, programs and rentals.
  • Coordinate rental events with other facility and park staff during evenings/weekends, as needed.
  • Event rentals typically occur on Fridays, Saturdays and/or Sundays.
  • Ability to work 1-2 evenings/weekend nights during busy season April-November.
  • Make sure the facility and grounds are clean, safe and set up for the event.
  • Performs opening and closing duties as assigned.
  • Greets and guides renters, guests and vendors to where they need to go upon arrival.
  • Communicates set up, access to electricity and kitchen, transporting of equipment, parking, and other policies to vendors upon arrival.
  • Monitors activities throughout the entirety of an event, both inside and on the grounds.
  • Ensure all rules & regulations for the facility and park are followed and enforced.
  • Uses good judgment when troubleshooting maintenance and safety issues throughout the event.
  • Is accessible throughout a rental event so that staff can be easily reached for questions or emergencies.
  • Assists rental guests who have accessibility issues to get to parking, bathrooms and event areas.
  • Monitors cleanliness of facility and grounds throughout the event.
  • May assist with set up and take down of equipment, tables, and chairs.
  • Checks supplies and re-stocks where necessary.
  • Works with other staff and vendors and communicates as a team with renters.
  • Monitors participants for safety and proper use of equipment.
  • Documents about safety hazards, violations and any damage to the site for further action by management. Conducts regular safety and maintenance checks.
  • Communicates clearly and courteously with the public and coworkers.
  • Is trained in the use of the AED, CPR & First Aid (can be accomplished after hiring).
  • Responsible for identifying and applying good sustainability practices in all aspects of Department operations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to ensure the smooth operation of the facility and grounds.

MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Must be at least 21 years of age and possess a High School Diploma or GED.

EXPERIENCE:
Must have experience working with events or catered functions and working with the public. Possess good communication skills. Attention to details and the ability to problem solve and prioritize. Possess good time management skills. Be flexible, reliable, responsible and enjoy working with the general public and have a basic understanding of park operations and two years of experience working with the public in a variety of settings.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Read and follow written directions. Able to work independently on all shifts (late night and early morning). Operate a motor vehicle safely, ability to deal with difficult individuals and capable of using a two-way radio and phone (voice mail). Ability to communicate with public safety officials in emergency and non-emergency situations, communicate with park officials, complete detailed reports, ability to manage numerous activities within a park site(s). Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to maintain effective relationships with the public. Must have basic knowledge of customer service, event management, and facility oversight.

RATE OF PAY:
Contingent - Paraprofessional
Minimum Wage - $18.00 per hour
